Trial of Saharawi human rights defender adjourned until May 18th

Dajla (occupied territories), May 12, 2015 (SPS) - A Moroccan court in the occupied city of Dajla on Monday postponed until 18 May 2015 the trial of the Saharawi political prisoner and human rights defender, Atigo Baray, along with 4 young Saharawis, said the Collective of Saharawi Human Rights Defenders (CODESA).


Family of Atigo Baray said they do not know the reasons surrounding such move, after they were prevented entry into the court’s sessions.

FM calls on UN to set date for self-determination referendum

Saharawi people celebrates 42nd anniversary of Polisario Front

Shaheed Elhafed (refugee camps) May 11, 2015 (SPS) - The Saharawi people celebrated Sunday 42th anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Front of Seguia al Hamra and Rio de Oro (Polisario Front) May 10, 1973.

 

The Polisario Front is a political movement whose objective is the independence of Western Sahara, then under Spanish control. The occupation of the territory by Morocco in 1975, triggered a liberation war that lasted 16 years.

 

SADR participates in CJCA 3rd Congress

Libreville, May 10, 2015 (SPS) - The Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) participated in the Third Congress of the Africa Constitutional Jurisdictions Conference (CJCA) held from May 8-10, in Libreville, Gabon.

 

The SADR was presented by the President of the Constitutional Council, Mohamed Bouzid, who had meetings with the participating delegations to inform them of the Saharawi Constitutional experience and the latest developments of the question of Western Sahara.

 

CRS urges for emergency aid to prevent humanitarian disaster in Saharawi refugee camps

Boujdour (Saharawi Refugee Camps), May 10, 2015 (SPS) - Saharawi Red Crescent (SRC) called Sunday, in Boudjdour, for an emergency aid of USD10 million for Saharawi refugees "to prevent an unprecedented humanitarian disaster."

 

"We have launched an appeal to the international community in general, and donors in particular, to take action and provide an emergency aid to Saharawi refugees, estimated by the World Food Programme (WFP) at USD10 million, to prevent an unprecedented humanitarian disaster," declared the chairman of the SRC, Yahya Bouhobeini.

Plunder of Western Sahara’s natural resources: NGOs demand UN urgent intervention

Algiers, May 10, 2015 (SPS) - In occupied Western Sahara, the plunder of this non autonomous territory’s natural resources reached an alarming stage in the last two years, say some 243 NGOs, including "Western Sahara Resource Watch" (WSRW) in a warning sent to the UN Secretary General.

 

In a letter sent on 15 April to President of the UN Security Council, Dina Kawar, Jordan's ambassador to the United Nations, the NGO WSRW warned against the plundering of Western Sahara's natural resources, particularly its mineral wealth.

Alarming rise of Moroccan cannabis in the Maghreb region

Shaheed Elhafed, May 10, 2015 (SPS)  - The drug seizures in the region countries have reached alarming proportions in recent months, according to press sources of the countries affected by the cannabis trafficking.

 

"The plague is gaining ground and taking dangerous proportions," said the press highlighting that "inquisitors investigations were often revealing and the discoveries confirm the transformations in the matter" in reference to changes in the methods used by traffickers to route their poison.

 

UJSARIO takes part in IUSY General Council work

 Yerevan (Armenia), May 9, 2015 (SPS) - A delegation of the Sahrawi Youth Union (UJSARIO) participated in the work of the General Council of the International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY) from May 7 -10, in the Armenian capital Yerevan.

 

 The Council will examine this year the current youth issues, fight against poverty, climate change and economic growth.

 

 The Council's work will also witness the participation of delegations representing the socialist youth and student organizations from different continents.

SADR takes part in AU experts meeting on trade

Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), May 9, 2015 (SPS) - The Saharawi Republic is taking part on Friday and Sunday in the Dedicated Session of Experts and Senior Officials, which will be followed by a Ministers of Trade meeting on the Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA).

 

Chaired by the Representative of the SADR Ministry of Trade, Ms. Nguia Zarug, a Saharawi delegation is taking part to the meeting including Ms. Maria El IId Saila, and Mr. Waddadi Salek, both from the Saharawi Permanent Mission to the AU and Embassy in Addis Ababa.

PAP vice-president received by President of Cuban National Assembly of People's Power

 Havana, May 8, 2015 (SPS) - The Vice-President of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), Suelma Beiruk, was received Friday by the President of the National Assembly of People's Power, Esteban Lazo Hernández, member of the Politburo, in the framework of her working visit in Cuba, reported the SADR embassy in Cuba.

 

 During the meetingthat focused on the relations between Cuba and Africa, Suelma warmly thanked Cuba for its assistance to Africa in areas such as health, culture, education and political support to the African peoples.
