Western Sahara issue, matter of decolonization, Algeria not involved

ALGIERS, December 16, 2013 (SPS) - Minister of Foreign Affairs Ramtane Lamamra reaffirmed on Sunday that the issue of Western Sahara is a decolonization matter that Algeria, which is not involved, defends the principle of the people’s rights to self-determination just like it has always done.

 

Nelson Mandela laid to rest in Qunu

Qunu (South Africa), December 16, 2013 (SPS) - South Africa’s former president Nelson Mandela was laid to rest Sunday near his family on his property in Qunu (south), the village of his childhood.

 

South African President Jacob Zuma rose when the coffin was lowered into the grave. Military helicopters and fighter jets flew over the site during the burial, and cannon shots were heard.

ALGIERS, December 16, 2013 (SPS) —The President of the Republic, Secretary General of the Polisario Front, Mohamed Abdelaziz, asserted Saturday in Algiers that the resistance of Sahrawi to occupation and oppression is a legitimate right and a sacred duty recognized by the United Nations, before the Fourth Algiers International Conference “Peoples’ Right to Resistance: the Case of the Sahrawi People”.

African Task Force denounces EU -Morocco fisheries agreement

ALGIERS, December 15, 2013 (SPS)  - The African Coordination of Solidarity with the Saharawi people, known as Task Force, denounced Saturday in Algiers at its first meeting, the European Union-Morocco fisheries agreement recently adopted by the European Parliament and called on governments around the world not to sign an agreement with Morocco including the occupied territories of Western Sahara.

ALGIERS, December 15, 2013 (SPS)  - The African Coordination of Solidarity with the Saharawi people, called "African Task Force" was installed Saturday in Algiers, in accordance with the recommendations of the African Conference in support of the Saharawi cause, held last October in Abuja (Nigeria).

 

This African coordination was set up a few hours before the opening of the "4th International Conference on the Rights of Peoples to Resistance: The Case of the Saharawi people."

 

Need to put pressure on Morocco for referendum organization

ALGIERS, December 15, 2013 (SPS)  – The participants in the 4th international conference of solidarity with the Sahrawi people affirmed Saturday in Algiers that it is "time" for the international community to "efficiently" put pressure on Morocco for the organization of a "free and democratic" referendum allowing the Sahrawi people to decide about their own destiny.

Saharawi political prisoner hidden by Moroccan authorities during UN delegation visit

SALE (Morocco), December 13, 2013 (SPS) - Moroccan occupying authorities hid on Wednesday a Saharawi political prisoner Mbarak Daoudi while a UN delegation was visiting prisons to enquire about the situation of human rights in the Moroccan prisons.

 

The Moroccan authorities transferred prisoner Mbarak Daoudi so that the UN delegation cannot see detention conditions of the Saharawi activist, “victim of torture in the prison of Salé (Rabat).”

 

Security Council requests quick implementation of UN Strategy for Sahel

EU must be part of solution not conflict in Western Sahara, says Polisario Front

BRUSSELS, December 13, 2013 (SPS) - The Polisario Front called on Thursday in Brussels (Belgium) the European Union (EU) to "be part of a solution and not the conflict in Western Sahara," adding that "the adoption of the fisheries agreement with Morocco including Saharawi waters encourages Morocco in its policy of occupation and intransigence."

 

UN urged to intervene to end Moroccan oppression against Sahrawis in occupied territories

BIR LEHLOU (Liberated territories), December 13, 2013 (SPS)  - Sahrawi President Mohamed Abdelaziz has denounced the "continuous" abuses against Sahrawi people, urging the United Nations to assume its responsibilities and end the oppression of Moroccan occupation forces.

 

In a letter sent Wednesday to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Abdelaziz reiterated his call to take urgent measures for the decolonization of Western Sahara and ensure the safety of Sahrawi citizens against the oppression of the Moroccan occupation forces.

 

Western Sahara: European Parliament reiterates support for a political solution on the basis of UN resolutions

STRASBOURG (France), December 13, 2013 (SPS) - The European Parliament (EP) reiterated its support for a fair political solution to the conflict in Western Sahara, on the basis of international law and UN resolutions, to enable the Saharawi people to exercise their right to self-determination.

 

 

In its latest annual report on the situation of human rights worldwide approved on Wednesday in Strasbourg, the European Parliament reiterated its call for the immediate release of all Saharawi political prisoners.

UN adopts resolution supporting Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination
