Nelson Mandela laid to rest in Qunu

Qunu (South Africa), December 16, 2013 (SPS) - South Africa’s former president Nelson Mandela was laid to rest Sunday near his family on his property in Qunu (south), the village of his childhood.

 

South African President Jacob Zuma rose when the coffin was lowered into the grave. Military helicopters and fighter jets flew over the site during the burial, and cannon shots were heard.

 

The burial of the anti-apartheid struggle hero, died Dec. 5 at 95 took place after ten days of national mourning in South Africa, and several days of international public tributes. (SPS)
