NGO calls for release of Saharawi political prisoner Mohamed Yahya Elhafed

 Ait Melloul (Morocco), March 1, 2015 (SPS) The Saharawi Collective of Human Rights Defenders (CODESA) called the Moroccan authorities to immediately  release the Saharawi political prisoner, Yahya Mohamed Hafed Iaaza, and all Sahrawi defenders of human rights languishing in Moroccan prisons.

 

 The call comes after the Saharawi political prisoner, serving a term of 15 years imprisonment since his arrest in 2008 for his participation in events celebrating the anniversary of SADR, enters the seventh year, indicated a CODESA statement.

 

SADR participates in preparatory meeting of African Games in 2015

 Brazzaville (Congo) March 1, 2015 (SPS) – The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) participated in the preparatory meeting held Thursday and Friday in the Republic of Congo Brazzaville, as part of the ongoing preparations for the eleventh session of the African Games scheduled in 2015 in the Republic of Congo, in which the SADR is taking part.

 

 The meeting discussed proposed presentations on the preparations for this important African event, and means to ensure the success of this session of the African Games.

 

National Union of Saharawi Women elected head of ECOSOCC Women and Equality Committee

Cairo, March 1, 2015 (SPS) The general secretary of the National Union of Saharawi Women (NUSW), Fatma El Mehdi, was elected as president of the Women's Committee and Equality in Economic, Social and African Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) during its second General Assembly opened Thursday in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

 During its third day, the General Assembly witnessed the presentation of numerous conferences on development strategies, climate change, agriculture, infrastructure and transport, in light of the 2063 agenda of the AU.

Sahrawi Prime Minister reaffirms Sahrawi people’s determination to continue fight to build independent State

Smara (refugee camps)- Prime Minister Abdelkader Taleb Oumar reaffirmed Saturday in Smara “the Sahrawi people’s determination to continue their fight for the edification of their independent and sovereign State.”

 

In a speech on the occasion of the 39th anniversary of the proclamation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), Taleb Oumar denounced “Morocco’s persistent prevarication towards the United Nations’ efforts aimed at settling the Western Sahara conflict.”

 

Polisario Front delegation hold talks with Russian officials in Moscow

 Moscow, February 28, 2015 (SPS) A Polisario Front delegation, led by the Saharawi Coordinator with MINURSO, M'hamed Khaded, held talks during their visit in Rusia with many Russian officials, according to the Polisario Front representation in Moscow.

 

 The delegation was received at the Institute of Oriental Studies in the Russian Academy of Sciences by its President Mr. Vitaly Naumkin.

Algiers, February 28, 2015 (SPS) - President of the Republic, Secretary General of the Polisario front, Mohamed Abdelaziz, received a congratulating message from Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika on the occasion of the 39th anniversary of the proclamation of the Sahrawi Republic in which he recalled Algeria’s support to the Sahrawi people’s fight for the recovery of their robbed rights and their self-determination.

UN organizations urged donors to continue aid for Sahrawi refugees

Algiers, February 27, 2015 (SPS)- The World Food Programme (WFP) and other United Nations agencies have urged on donors to continue their food aid for the Sahrawis living in refugee camps Tindouf (Algeria), warning of the insufficient funding to meet their needs in the second half of current year.

 

WFP Deputy Director in Algeria Francesca Caponera said that "a halt in WFP food assistance would have a severe impact on the food security and nutritional status of the refugees and may have unpredictable consequences on the stability of the area."

Western Sahara: Algeria, Kenya reaffirm support for UN efforts

Algiers, February 27, 2015 (SPS)-Algeria and Kenya reaffirmed their support for the efforts of United Nation to reach a political solution, which provides for the self-determination of the People of Western Sahara, stressed a joint communiqué released Thursday after President Kenyatta's state visit to Algeria at the invitation of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

 

European Parliament’s Western Sahara Intergroup installed

Brussels, February 27, 2015 (SPS) -A parliamentary group called "Intergroup Peace in Western Sahara", made of 119 MEPs representing a wide range of political movements and groups was set up Tuesday at the European Parliament in Brussels.

 

The setting-up ceremony took place in the presence of Saharawi Minister for Relations with Europe Mohamed Sidati, President of the European Conference for support and solidarity with the Saharawi people (EUCOCO) Pierre Galand and and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

 

UK not planning to send representative to Crans Montana Forum, says Ellwood

London, Feb 24, 2015 (SPS) - The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Mr. Tobias Ellwood, on Monday said his country (UK) does not plan to send a representative to the Crans Montana Forum, to be held in the occupied city of Dajla next March.


Answering a question by the Liberal Democrat MP Mark William, the official said his country have not received an invitation to the Forum, adding they are not planning to send a representative to the event.

U.S. supports UN efforts in Western Sahara

Algiers, Feb 24, 2015 (SPS) - The U.S. Ambassador in Algiers, Ms. Joan Polaschik, reiterated Sunday her country’s support to the efforts of the United Nations (UN) to reach a peaceful and durable solution accepted by both parties to the conflict of Western Sahara.


The U.S. official also expressed support to the work of Mr. Christopher Ross, UN personal envoy for Western Sahara, and Mrs. Kim Bolduc, special representative and head of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

Algerian Karim Hag Meliani wins medal of Sahara Marathon 15

Smara (refugee camps), Feb 24, 2015 (SPS) - The Algerian runner, Karim Hag Meliani, won the medal of 42-km-long Sahara Marathon breaking the race record with 3 hours 3 minutes.


Speaking to SPS, the runner said the first 21km of the race went without problem, while the second was a bite difficult, hailing the organizational level of the event.


In relevant context, the Algerian runner Thabit Wadih won the semi-Marathon (21 km), which started from the Wilaya of Awserd owards Smara.

EU will not participate in Crans Montana Forum, confirms Juncker

Brussels, Feb 24, 2015 (SPS) - The President of the European Union (EU), Mr. Jean Claude Juncker, on Monday indicated that the EU is not going to take part at the Crans Montana Forum, expected to be organized in the occupied city of Dajla next March.


The announcement by EU President was made in a reply to a letter sent to him by the President of the Republic Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz on 10 February 2015. (SPS)

President of Republic asks UN to probe the assassination of Saharawi citizen

Bir Lehlou (liberated zones), Feb 24, 2015 (SPS) - The President of the Republic, Secretary General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz, has deplored the move by Moroccan occupying state to bury the young Saharawi boy, Mohamed Lamin Ould Haidala, in the absence of his family, urging the UN to open “an independent investigation” into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Saharawi civil society starts campaign against Morocco’s plunder of natural resources

Smara (refugee camps), Feb 24, 2015 (SPS) - Saharawi civil society organizations on Monday announced the start of a national campaign in protest of Saharawi natural resources’ plunder by the Moroccan occupying state and some foreign companies.


In a statement to the press, the Saharawi civil society components decided to officially launch the campaign tomorrow, February 25th, by organizing several seminars to raise awareness about the seriousness of these illegal activities.
