Sahara Marathon 2015 to be celebrated next Tuesday

Chahid Al Hafed (refugee camps), Feb 19, 2015 (SPS) - The 15th edition of Sahara Marathon, an annual international sport demonstration, will be celebrated next Tuesday, February 24th, in the Saharawi refugee camps, said the organizers.


According to the source, this year’s edition will be dedicated to shedding light on the Saharawi children’s rights.


The Sahara Marathon includes the 42km standard-distance marathon (main), in addition to shorter distances of 21km, 10km, 5km and the children’s race.

Council of Ministers strongly condemns Morocco’s obstruction to international efforts

Graduation of new batch of National Gendarmerie Force

Chahid Al Hafed (refugee camps), Feb 19 (SPS) - A new batch of the National Gendarmerie Force, the batch of martyr Mhamed Mohamed Abdallahi Rahel, on Thursday graduated.


The graduation ceremony was overseen by the President of the Republic, Supreme Commande-in-Chief of Armed Forces and General-Secretary of the Frente Polisario Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz, in the presence of Prime Minister Abdelkader Omar and Defense Minister Mohamed Lamin Bouhali, along other members of the National Secretariat and Government. President of Republic chairs meeting of Liberation Army General Staff

Chahid Al Hafed (refugee camps), Feb 19, 2015 (SPS) - The President of the Republic, Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, and Secretary General of the Frente Polisario, Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz, on Thursday morning chaired a meeting of the Staff of the General Command of Saharawi People’s Liberation Army.


Convened at the Ministry of National Defense, the meeting examined the army’s readiness and set future programmes.

UN Personal Envoy for Western Sahara in Algeria as from Wednesday

Algiers, Feb 18, 2015 (SPS) - Personal Envoy of UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara, Christopher Ross, is expected Wednesday in Algiers, as part of his regional tour, which began last Saturday, said Algeria Foreign Ministry in a statement.


This new tour which ends on 23 February and is the fifth of its kind since Ross’s appointment in 2009, is part of the UN efforts to revive the settlement process of Western Sahara question, said the source.

Moroccan occupying forces kidnap Sahrawi minor boy

El Aaiun (occupied territories), Feb 18, 2015 (SPS) - Moroccan occupying forces have kidnapped the Sahrawi minor boy, Brahim Mraikl, on the ground of his participation in a peaceful demonstration, stated the Collective of Sahrawi Human Rights Defenders (CODESA).


According to the source, the minor boy was beaten and verbally insulted by Moroccan policemen.


In his testimony, Mraikl noted that he was injured at several parts of his body, specifically his left hand, shoulder and the mouth. (SPS)

Saharawi political prisoner begins open hunger strike

Tiznit (Morocco), Feb 18, 2015 (SPS) - The Saharawi political prisoener, Abdellahi Boukyud, on Wednesday started an open hunger strike in protest to the physical assault and verbal abuse he experienced inside the Moroccan Prison of Tiznit, said a source of the Ministry of Occupied Territories and Communities Abroad.


Boukyud was arbitrarily arrested in the city of Guleimim, southern Morocco in 2013. He is now serving a 4-year prison term.

Saharawi woman aborted under Moroccan torture

El Aaiun (occupied territories), Feb 18, 2015 (SPS) - The Saharawi female citizen, Lalla Al-Mosawi, has lost her 5-month baby after being subject to torture at the hand of Moroccan occupying police, said right sources.


“She (Lalla) had underwent medical examinations after she found thrown outside the city limits. She was kidnapped by policemen in a civil car, before threatened to be raped,” stated Ghali Sweyah, housband of the victim.

President Mohamed Abdelaziz extends condolences to Egyptian counterpart

Trial of Saharawi political prisoner adjourned until February 23rd

El Aaiun (occupied territories), Feb 17, 2015 (SPS) - Moroccan occupying court on Monday delayed, for the third time in a raw, until next Monday the trial of the Saharawi political prisoner, Abdeljaleg Al-Markhi.


Al-Markhi, on hunger strike, is now serving a 4-year jail sentence.


He was arrested on the ground of his human rights activism and his participation in various demonstrations calling for the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination and independence. (SPS)

Socialist International to dispatch mission to Western Sahara

Valencia (Spain), Feb 17, 2015 (SPS) - The Socialist International Mediterranean Committee has decided, at the end of its meeting convened on 13-14 February 2015 in Valencia (Spain), to send a mission to Western Sahara next May.


This mission will be headed by Antonio Yáñez, former diplomat from the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE).

UK renews support to UN efforts to resolve Western Sahara conflict

London, Feb 17, 2015 (SPS) - The UK Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Mr. Tobias Ellwood, has reaffirmed his country’s support to the UN-led efforts to find a durable a mutually acceptable political solution, ensuring the right to self-determination for the Saharawi people.


Mr. Ellwood said the ministry is consistently discussing the issue of human rights in Western Sahara when meeting with its counterparts in the world, lastly of which was in New York last January.
