EU should protect human rights in occupied Western Sahara

Strasbourg, Nov 30, 2011 (SPS) - A delegation of Sahrawi human rights defenders and  the European Movement of Solidarity with the Saharawi people have visited Tuesday, the European Parliament to request EU protecting  human rights in Western Sahara under Moroccan occupation, according to the Polisario representation to Europe.

 

Sahrawi diplomat meets Finnish Minister of Foreigner Affairs

Helsinki , Nov, 28, 2011 (SPS)- The Polisario Front representative in Finland, Amaima Mahamud, called Monday on the government of Finland to intervene to support the protection of human rights in occupied Western Sahara, during a meeting with Finnish foreign affairs, Erkki Tuomioja, held  in Helsinki.

 

The Saharawi diplomat gave a detailed explanation on the latest developments of the Saharawi cause, highlighting the worrying and deteriorating human rights situation in the occupied territories.

 

Algeria Says Won’t Tolerate the Internationalization of the Syrian Crisis

Algeria Foreign Ministry said on Monday that it stands against the internationalization of the Syrian crisis, preferring rather solving the issue within the Arab-Arab edge.

 

Algeria FM indicated in a written statement that the approval of the bunch of sanctions by the Arab League against Syria is meant to force the authority there to sign on the monitoring protocol to allow Arab observers to enter the troubled country.

Logistical problems plagued many polling stations on Monday but the first day of voting passed mostly peacefully.

UN Committee against Torture concerned on the situation of human rights in Western Sahara

Geneva, November 26, 2011 (SPS) - The UN Committee against Torture expressed Friday its concern about allegations concerning the situation of human rights in Western Sahara, which is occupied by Morocco.

In its conclusions published in the 47th session, the Committee expressed concern about allegations received on the situation in Western Sahara, where cases of arbitrary arrest and detention, solitary confinement (...) torture and ill-treatments have been reported”

Polisario Front hopes a positive role from Spain with the new government

Algiers, Nov 26, 2011 (SPS) - The Polisario Front’s Representative to the United Nations, Mr. Ahmed Boukhari, expressed Thursday his hope that electing a new government in Spain “would open a new page of relations with the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic.”

In an interview with Algeria’s International Radio, Mr. Boukhari wished that the election of a new government in Spain under the leadership of the Popular Party (right) “will open the door towards a new positive role played by this country.”

Brussels: Seminar about Moroccan Shame Wall in Western Sahara

Brussels, Nov 26, 2011 (SPS) - At the initiative of Belgian organizations, a number of European figures, including the European MP Mr. Willy Meyer and assistant professor at Brussels’ Free University Mr. Vincent Shabu, have activated Thursday a seminar on the Moroccan Shame Wall in Western Sahara.

The Seminar was attended by the Saharawi Minister Delegate in charge of Europe, Mr. Mohamed Sidati, and Polisario Representative to Belgium, Mr. Salek Abdrahman.

Two French Citizens Kidnapped

Bamako, November 24, 2011 (SPS) - Two French citizens were kidnapped by armed men on Wednesday night in Hombori, in Mali, according to police sources and local authorities.

 

They say seven armed men kidnapped the two men from their hotel just after 0100 local time.

 

Both are geologists who were employed at a cement works in the region.

 

They had apparently just returned from briefing their Malian colleagues on their day's work.

 

Police and local authorities agree that the men have been taken to northern Mali.

Yemeni president gives into mounting pressure

Sanaa, Novmber 24, 2011 (SPS) - Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, has signed a deal to transfer power to his vice president ending his rule of more than 30 years. The agreement follows nine months of protests in Yemen.

 

The deal was signed at the royal palace in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Under the agreement, Saleh transfers his powers to his deputy Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi. In return he will retain the title of president until a new head of state is elected.

 

HRW: Morocco - Stop Harassing Election Boycott Advocates - Police Question Over 100 in Advance of Parliamentary Vote

Rabat, 24 November 2011 (SPS) — Moroccan authorities should stop harassing people campaigning to boycott the November 25, 2011 parliamentary elections, Human Rights Watch said today. Since October 20, police around the country have brought in more than 100 Moroccans to police stations to question them about the distribution of pro-boycott leaflets or other efforts to urge voters not to cast a ballot.

Bir Lahlu (Liberated territories), November 24, 2011 (SPS)- President of the Republic, Secretary General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz has sent on Wednesday a letter of condolences to the family of Mrs. Danielle Mitterrand, President of France-Libertés Foundation, died Tuesday at age of 87 years in Paris.

 

“In this painful event, on behalf of SADR people and Government, and on my own behalf, I express to you and members of the foundation my sincere condolences ” President of Republic wrote to Mitterrand’s family.

Libya names new government

Tripoli, November 23, 2011 (SPS) - Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) has appointed as new Defence Minister the local commander whose forces captured Muammar Gaddafi's son at the weekend.

 

Osama Al-Juwali, head of the military council in Zintan, was given the defence job as part of a cabinet line-up in which secularist liberals were dominant and which had no key roles for the Islamists who have been making a bid for power since Gaddafi's fall.

 

Police, protesters clash for 5th day in Egypt

CAIRO, Nov. 23, 2011 (SPS) - Egyptian police clashed with anti-government protesters for a fifth day in central Cairo today as a rights group raised the overall death toll from the ongoing unrest to 38.

 

The clashes came one day after tens of thousands of protesters in Tahrir Square rejected a promise by Egypt's military ruler to speed up a presidential election to the first half of next year. The military previously had floated late next year or early 2013 as the likely date for the vote.

 

Former French first lady Danielle Mitterand dies

Paris, November 23, 2011 (SPS) - Former French first lady Danielle Mitterand died on Tuesday at the age of 87. AFP news agency quoted unnamed sources close to the widow of Socialist president Francois Mitterand as saying she passed away in the Georges Pompidou European Hospital in Paris during the night.

 

Mitterand was admitted to hospital on Friday suffering from anemia and extreme fatigue. Doctors put her in an induced coma.

 

Polisario Front denounces vote of European parliament’s Fisheries Committee to renew fisheries agreement with Morocco

  Brussels, November 23,2011(SPS)  The Polisario Front, Tuesday , denounced  the vote by the European Pariament’s Fisheries Committee to recommend the entry into force of the proposed one-year renewal of the EU’s Fisheries Partnership Agreement with Morocco, which is used by EU fishermen to fish illegally in Western Sahara's waters.
