Cuba reiterates "firm" commitment for the decolonization of Western Sahara

New York, Oct 10, 2012 (SPS) - The Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador  Oscar León González reiterated his country's firm commitment towards  decolonization of Western Sahara, urging Member States to "work together to end the last case of decolonization in Africa. "

 

Ghali receives Norwegian Ambassador to Algiers

Algiers, Oct 10, 2012 (SPS) - Member of National Secretariat- Ambassador to Algeria, Brahim Ghali has received on Tuesday at Saharawi Embassy the Norwegian Ambassador to Algiers, Arild Retvedt Øyen.

 

The Norwegian Ambassador asserted that the visit is part of the mutual cooperation and aims to be aware of the latest developments of the national cause, pointing out that his country follows the negotiations with anticipation and interest.

 

Guatemala supports UN Secretary General’s efforts in Western Sahara

New York, Oct 9, 2012 (SPS) - Guatemala has expressed support to the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Special Envoy Christopher Ross to help the parties to the Western Sahara conflict, POLISARIO Front and Morocco, to find a just and lasting solution.


Addressing meeting of the UN Fourth Committee on Monday, First Secretary at Permanent Mission of Guatemala to the United Nations Mr. Gabriel Orellana ZABALZA expressed his country’s support to the UN efforts in Western Sahara.

President Mohamed Abdelaziz attends funeral of late Algerian President Chadli

Algiers, October 8, 2012 (SPS) - The President of the Republic and Secretary General of the POLISARIO Front, Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz, attended Monday the funeral of the former Algerian President Chadli Benjdid, who died Saturday at the age of 83 following a long illness.


The President Mohamed Abdelaziz paid today morning at the People’s Palace in Algiers the last tribute to memory of the deceased Chadli, third President of independent Algeria.

Palermo conference on Mediterranean peace voices support to Saharawi people’s self-determination

Palermo, Sicily (Italy), Oct 8, 2012 (SPS) - Delegations of several countries that took place in a conference on peace in the Mediterranean, held from 5 to 7 October 2012 in Palermo in Sicily (Italy), have voiced support to the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination, condemning repression and oppression carried out by Morocco in Western Sahara, according to the Saharawi Representation to Europe.


The Conference was attended by several progressive parties and organizations around the Mediterranean.

Preparatory conferences for UGTSARIO 7th Congress kicks off Monday

Chahid Al Hafed (refugee camps), Oct 6, 2012 (SPS) - The preparatory conferences for the seventh congress of the Saharawi Workers Union (UGTSARIO) will kick off Monday in all wilayas and national institutions.


In a press conference held Saturday, the UGTSARIO Secretary General Mr. Mohamed Lehbib Mohamed Cheikh said that the conferences will conclude the preparation phase, pointing to the circumstances in which the Congress is held.

Gathering outside Moroccan embassy in Tshwane to protest illegal occupation of Western Sahara

Tshwane, Pretoria (South Africa), Oct 6, 2012 (SPS) - Thousands of South African workers, including members of WFTY, gathered Wednesday outside Morocco’s embassy in Tshwane in Pretoria, South Africa, to register their “serious protest and indignation” at Morocco’s continued illegal occupation of Western Sahara.


The demonstration was held on the International Day of Action of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU).

U.S. Department of State criticizes Morocco’s human rights violations in Western Sahara

Washington, Oct 6, 2012 (SPS) - The U.S. Department of State has sent a report to the Congress criticizing Morocco’s human rights violations in Western Sahara, confirming that the situation was a matter of “serious concern.”
The report, a copy of it obtained by SPS, was developed by the U.S. Department of State in line with a law passed on December 2011 by the U.S. Congress, which asked the Department of State to ensure respect for human rights in Western Sahara before providing any military assistance to Morocco.

Parliament of Aragon requires respect for Saharawi human rights in any agreement between Morocco and EU

Madrid, Oct 5, 2012 (SPS) - The Parliament of Aragon’s Spanish Province approved Thursday a motion, in which it insisted on the need to require the respect for human rights in Western Sahara by Morocco in any new agreement between Morocco and European Union, informed POLISARIO Office in Aragon.


Serious and in-depth discussions between the political parties were occurred at Aragon’s Parliament hall on the economic relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the European Union, with regard to Western Sahara fisheries.

Chahid Al Hafed (refugee camps), Oct 5, 2012 (SPS) - A Saharawi source from the Committee for the Referendum in Western Sahara told SPS that both the Personal Envoy and Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Western Sahara will present forthcoming November a detailed report on the negotiations between the POLISARIO Front and Morocco as well as the obstacles face work of the MINURSO in Western Sahara.
