UN: Over 240 NGOs demand rapporteur on human rights in Sahrawi occupied territories

Geneva, 31 August 2020 (SPS) -Over 240 Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) composing the Geneva Support Group for the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights in Western Sahara on Saturday advocated the creation of a mandate of special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Sahrawi occupied territories.

Ministerial delegation inspects units specialized in combating smuggling and organized crime

Liberated Teritories,  30 August 2020 (SPS) - The ministerial delegation, which is visiting the liberated territories of the Sahrawi Republic as part of the policy of accelerating their development and reconstruction, has arrived at the headquarters of the Special Units on Combating Smuggling and Organized Crime.
This visit comes to discuss means to accelerate the reconstruction of the liberated territories in accordance with the resolutions and recommendations of the 15th Congress of the Polisario Front.

Western Sahara conflict still regarded as "decolonization issue"

New York (United Nations), 29 August 2020 (SPS) - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reaffirmed in a recent report that the question of Western Sahara is still considered, by the UN General Assembly, as a decolonization issue.
"The question of Western Sahara is still on the table at the UN General Assembly as a decolonization issue and also held the attention of the UN Security Council," the UN chief said in his report on the activities undertaken by the stakeholders during the Third International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism in the World.

Human rights defense mechanism for Western Sahara

Shaheed Al Hafeed, 29 August 2020 (SPS) - Minister of Occupied Territories and the Sahrawi Community Abroad has announced the creation of a human rights coordination mechanism to document and expose the violations committed by Morocco against the Sahrawi people since the military invasion of Western Sahara in 1975. 
This coordination mechanism has been created upon instruction from Sahrawi President Brahim Ghali during a meeting held Monday under the supervision of Premier Bouchraya Hamoudi Beyoun.

Gradual stability in the number of Coronavirus cases

Chahid El Hafed, August 26, 2020 (SPS) - Dr. Mohamed Salem Chej, the official spokesman for the National Committee for the Prevention of Coronavirus, has Tuesday confirmed that the Sahrawi refugee camps began to witness stability in the number of cases; as no case has been recorded for the sixth consecutive day.

Covid 19: No new confirmed cases, 3 recoveries

Shaheed Al-Hafed, 23 August 2020 (SPS) -  Spokesperson of the National Committee for the Prevention against Coronavirus, Dr. Mohamed-Salem Al-Sheikh, has confirmed that no new Coronavirus cases, while 3 recovery cases had been recovered within the last 24 hours.
During his presentation of the epidemiological situation in the Sahrawi refugee camps, he indicated that the total number of cases recorded so far remained 25, of which 16 have recovered and two died.
He noted that the suspected cases were decreasing compared to the previous weeks.

WFP denies Algerian tax on humanitarian aid for Sahrawi refugees

Rome, 15 August 2020 (SPS) - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) said that food aid for Sahrawi refugees is not subject to any taxation by Algeria, denying the false allegations peddled by the Moroccan embassy in Rome, the Algerian News Agency APS reported.

Algiers, 15 August 2020 (SPS) - Sahrawi Ambassador to Algeria, Abdelkader Taleb Omar, praised on Wednesday the efforts of Algeria, leadership, people and political class, in favor of the Sahrawi cause and the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination.
During the audience granted to him by the Secretary General of the National Democratic Rally (RND), Tayeb Zitouni, the Sahrawi ambassador said he "informed the party leadership of the latest developments in the Sahrawi cause which is beginning a decisive turning point."

Western Sahara is a non-self-governing territory, says EU

Brussels, August 2020 (SPS) - High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, reaffirmed that the EU "considers Western Sahara as a Non-Self-Governing Territory, whose final status will be determined by the outcome of the ongoing UN process."
In a new written reply to a question addressed to him by Polish MEP Janina Ochojska, Borrell recently stated that "the EU position on Western Sahara (occupied by Morocco since 1975) is fully aligned with UN Security Council resolutions".
