Film on Sahrawi refugees’ situation screened in Brussels

Brussels (Belgium), October 20, 2014 (SPS) - The screening of a film on the situation of the Sahrawi refugees, as part of the Festival of Liberties in Brussels, allowed to raise awareness about the difficult reality and situation in which the Sahrawi people live in the refugee camps and occupied territories, said the Belgian Committee of Support to Sahrawi People.

 

Norwegian Christian Students condemn Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara

Oslo (Norway), October 19, 2014 (SPS) – The National Council of the federation of Norwegian Christian students has expressed their condemnation to the Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara, insisting on respect for international law, particularly on the issues of decolonization.

 

The Council affirmed in a resolution its support to the right of the Sahrawi people to freedom and self-determination.

 

WSRW condemns illegal fishing of Japanese vessels in Saharawi territorial waters

Oslo, October 19, 2014 (SPS) - The Western Sahara Resource Watch (WSRW) has condemned the illegal fishing of three Japanese vessels in the Saharawi territorial waters, asking the Japanese government to intervene to end the fishing in which they have been engaged, in a letter Friday to the Japanese government.

 

HRW calls on UN to expand MINURSO mandate to include human rights

Algiers, October 19, 2014 (SPS) -  The international organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) called on the United Nations to extend the mandate of MINURSO (United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara) to include humans rights monitoring in occupied Sahrawi territories  and Sahrawi refugee camps in Algeria, said HRW’s report released Saturday in Algiers.

 

Saharawi delegation meets with President of Committee on Women's Issues in EP

Brussels, October 18, 2014 (SPS) - A Saharawi delegation composed of Shaba Saini, Member of the National Parliament, and Mohamed Sidati, Minister of State for Europe, met with Mrs. Iratxe García Pérez, President of the Committee on Women's Issues at the European Parliament.




The meeting addressed the suffering endured by the Saharawi people in the occupied territories of Western Sahara due to the grave human rights violations perpetuated by Moroccan occupying authorities.

Independence of Saharawi people, second item on agenda of Venezuela at UNSC

Caracas, October 18, 2014 (SPS) - The independence of the Saharawi people will appear on the agenda of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela when it takes its post as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council on January 1, 2015, according to a report of “the Universal”.

 

 Venezuela should establish positions on 10 themes, including the independence of the Saharawi people and the recognition of Palestine as a state.

 

 Its election to the UN Security Council for the period from 2015 to 2016 occurred with 181 votes.

 

CGTP-IN supports legitimate struggle of Saharawi people

 Lisbon (Portugal), October 18, 2014 (SPS) - The Secretary General of the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers-National Inter Trade Union (CGTP-IN), Mr. Armenio Carlos, expressed support and solidarity with the struggle of the Saharawi people, during a meeting Friday with the Polisario Front representative in Lisbon, Ahmed Fal Mhamed.

 

Mr. Carlos said affirmed the intention of the organization to work nationally and internationally to ensure the respect of the right to self-determination of the Saharawi people in accordance with UN resolutions.

Morocco called to respect basic rights of Saharawi political prisoner (Adala UK)

London, Oct 17, 2014 (SPS) - Adala UK has requested, once again, the international community to put pressure the Kingdom of Morocco to respect the basic rights of the Saharawi political prisoners, calling for providing the necessary medical assistance.


The Saharawi political prisoner Elmojahid Mayara, now languishing in the Lakhal Prison in the occupied city of El Aaiun, entered an open hunger strike on October 14, 2014.

US ONG urgently calls for human rights monitoring in occupied Western Sahara

Washington, Oct 17, 2014 (SPS) - The US-Western Sahara Foundation has sent an urgent call for the international community to monitor the human rights situation in Western Sahara, occupied by Morocco.


In a statement issued by the Foundation, Chairman Suzanne Scholte repeated her call on the international community to “urgently act” to end the unjustified violence against defenseless civilians in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.

Five new non-permanent members elected to Security Council

New York, Oct 16, 2014 (SPS) - The 193 Members States of the General Assembly of the UN on Thursday elected Angola, Malaysia, New Zealand, Spain and Venezuela to serve as non-permanent members on the Security Council for two-year terms beginning on 1 January 2015.


The five countries will join the 5 permanent members, US, Russia, France, China and UK and the 5 other non-permanent members, Chad, Chile, Jordan, Lithuania and Nigeria.


They will replace Argentina, Australia, Luxembourg, South Korea and Rwanda.

President calls for more pressure and sanctions on Moroccan occupying state

Bir Lehlou (liberated zones), Oct 16, 2014 (SPS) - President of the Republic, Secretary General Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz deplored the recent repressive acts perpetrated on Wednesday evening against innocent people by Moroccan occupying forces in occupied El Aaiun, calling for more pressure and sanctions from the UN to stop such practices.

Western Sahara, non-self-governing territory (EU official)

Brussels, Oct 16, 2014 (SPS) - Western Sahara is a non-self-governing territory, said Mr. Štefan FÜLE, EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, adding “Morocco is actually an administering authority.”


Responding to a question of MEP on behalf of the European Commission, Mr Füle stressed that according to the UN attitude, Western Sahara is considered a “non-self-governing territory”, highlighting that the Kingdom of Morocco is actually “an administering authority.”

ICRC organizes interactive session with national media

Chahid Al Hafed (refugee camps), Oct 16, 2014 (SPS) - Field Office of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the Saharawi refugee camps on Thursday morning organized an interactive meeting with the representatives of Saharawi national mass-media.


The meeting was held in collaboration with ICRC’s field office in Tunisia.

Saharawi delegation takes part at MAURITANIDES 2014

Nouakchott, Oct 16, 2014 (SPS) - A Saharawi delegation, led by the Representative in Australia Mr. Kamal Fadel, participated at the 3rd Mauritanian Mining, Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition (MAURITANIDES 2014), held from 13 to 15 October 2014.


The delegation took this opportunity to organize an exhibition, through which they raised awareness about the mineral potentials of the Saharawi Republic (SADR).


They also held meetings with some participating delegations.

SNRW deplores Glencore Xstrata’s involvement in illegal activities in occupied Western Sahara

Chahid Al Hafed (refugee camps), Oct 16, 2014 (SPS) - The Saharawi Natural Resources Watch (SNRW) “strongly” on Wednesday deplored the involvement of the Swiss-based Glencore Xstrata in some illegal oil-drilling activities offshore Western Sahara, in a statement issued on Wednesday.


The company was given two licenses to drill for oil and gas in the region of Foum Agwainit, south-western the occupied city of El Aaiun, capital of Western Sahara.

Algeria welcomes with “satisfaction” adoption of UN resolution on decolonization in Western

Algiers, Oct 16, 2014 (SPS) - Algeria has welcomed with “satisfaction” the adoption, Tuesday, by UN General Assembly’s Special Political and Decolonization Committee (Fourth Committee) of a resolution on Western Sahara, reiterating United Nations’ commitment to the completion of the decolonization process in Western Sahara, the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Algeria, Abdelaziz Benali Cherif, said Wednesday.
