Submitted on

Brussels, October 18, 2014 (SPS) - A Saharawi delegation composed of Shaba Saini, Member of the National Parliament, and Mohamed Sidati, Minister of State for Europe, met with Mrs. Iratxe García Pérez, President of the Committee on Women's Issues at the European Parliament.

The meeting addressed the suffering endured by the Saharawi people in the occupied territories of Western Sahara due to the grave human rights violations perpetuated by Moroccan occupying authorities.

The delegation, in this respect, spoke about the death of the Saharawi political prisoner, Hassena Elwali Aleya, urging Morocco to reveal the circumstances behind his death.

Emphasizing on the important role played by Saharawi women in the legitimate struggle for self-determination and independence of their country, the meeting tackled the possibility for Saharawi women to be able to make their people’s voice heard within the European Parliament.

It, therefore, underscored the need for the MINURSO (UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara) to organize a “free and impartial” referendum on self-determination for the Saharawi people.

At the end of this meeting, Saharawi female MP Chaba Saini requested Ms. Pérez to write to the UN in order that MINURSO would be able to carry out its mission. (SPS)
