UN called to protect civilians in Western Sahara (Saharawi Community in UK)

London, Oct 15, 2014 (SPS) - The Saharawi community in the United Kingdom has called upon the United Nations to ensure protection for innocent people in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, said the Polisario Front office in London.


In a ceremony held Wednesday to mark the 39th anniversary of the declaration of National Unity, the Saharawi community asked the UN and international organizations of human rights to “urgently” act to establish a mechanism protecting the Saharawi people from Morocco’s oppression.

Saharawi political prisoner sentenced to a year in prison

El Aaiun (occupied territories), Oct 15, 2014 (SPS) - The Saharawi political prisoner, Abdelfatah Dallal, on Wednesday unfairly sentenced to a year in prison by the Moroccan Court of Appeal in the occupied city of El Aaiun, capital of Western Sahara, according to the Ministry of Occupied Territories and Diaspora.


After delaying his trail twice in a row, the Moroccan court pronounced an unfair judgment against the Saharawi political prisoner.

NFI asks UN to incorporate human rights mandate in MINURSO mission

Wisconsin (USA), Oct 15, 2014 (SPS) - The U.S. non-governmental organization “Not Forgotten International (NFI) on Tuesday called on the UN to incorporate a human rights mandate in the mission of MINURSO, adding that the recent death of the Saharawi political prisoner, Hasana El-Ouali, is another proof that this organ must have such a task.

Adala UK demands “immediate action” to assure respect for Saharawi prisoners’ rights

London, Oct 15, 2014 (SPS) - The British non-governmental organization “Adala UK” has demanded that immediate action is taken to assure the respect of the Saharawi prisoners’ rights, including of which their right to medical attention.


In a statement issued Tuesday, a copy of which was obtained by SPS, Adala UK described as “appalling” health of the Saharawi political prisoners incarcerated in Moroccan prisons, highlighting that most of them are subject to severe torture and continue to be ill-treated.

UN reaffirms Saharawi people’s right to self-determination, says Ould Salek

New York, Oct 14, 2014 (SPS) - The UN Member States unanimously reaffirmed the right of the people of Western Sahara to self-determination and their responsibility vis-à-vis the Saharawi people and the decolonization of its territory, illegally occupied by Morocco, said Tuesday in New York Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Salek.

Cuba reiterates support for right of Saharawi people to self-determination

New York, October 14, 2014 (SPS) - The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cuba to the United Nations, Oscar Leon Gonzales, reiterated his country's support for the legitimate right of the Saharawi people to self-determination, in his speech Friday before the UN Decolonization Committee.

 

"Cuba defends the right of the people of Western Sahara to self-determination on the basis of respect for the principles and purposes of the UN Charter, international law and relevant UN resolutions," he said.

 

Botswana reaffirms support to Saharawi people’s right to self-determination

New York, Oct 14, 2014 (SPS) - The Republic of Botswana on Friday reaffirmed its position of support to the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination through an open referendum, adding it is saddened by that fact that a solution to Western Sahara question “has still not been found.”

New York (United Nations), October 14, 2014 (SPS) – Mr. Anthony Bosah, permanent representative of Nigeria to the United Nations affirmed Friday at the debate before the UN Decolonization Committee that the referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people is one of the most pressing issues on the agenda of the United Nations.  

 

“Nigeria views the quest of free and impartial referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people as one of the most pressing tasks on the agenda of the United Nations,” he said.

 

Speaker of parliament completes working visit to Balearic Islands

Balearic Islands (Spain), October 13, 2014 (SPS) - The President of the National Council (Parliament), Khatri Addouh completed his working visit to the Balearic Islands, which began on October 9, at the official invitation of the Speaker of the Balearic Islands parliament.

 

Mr. Addouh gave a lecture in which he introduced a presentation of the history of the conflict over Western Sahara, the latest developments of the issue in light of the obstacles erected by Morocco to the search for a just solution to the conflict that lasted so many years.

Training session for 38 parliamentarians and officials of National Council

 Algiers, October 12, 2014 (SPS) - The Algerian National People's Assembly (APN) on Sunday launched a training session for the benefit of 38 parliamentarians and officials of the National Council (Parliament), which will last until November7.

 

 Saharawi trainees attend, during this session, classes on several issues including constitutional law, methodology for analyzing bills, analysis of state budget and parliamentary diplomacy, in addition to the information technology and communication and drafting of legal texts.

 

National Radio launches new website

Shaheed Elhafed, October 13, 2014 (SPS) - The National Radio on Sunday launched its new website, www: rasdradio.info, on the occasion of the 39th anniversary of National Unity.

 

 The National radio has been the voice of the Saharawi people's struggle since its inauguration on December 28, 1975, aims through its new website to reach the widest number of listeners worldwide.
