UNHCR donates USD300,000 in food aid to Saharawi refugees

ALGIERS, July23,2013(SPS) - United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has donated USD300,000 in food aid to Saharawi refugees for the holy month of Ramadan, the UN agency announced Tuesday.

 

"As every year, the UNHCR contributes to improving food aid to Saharawi refugees during the month of Ramadan, with supplies of vegetables and fresh fruits, reaching 437 tonnes of potatoe and 125 tonnes of onion, worth USD300,000," the representative of the UNHCR in Algiers, Ralf H. W. Gruenert, said.

Peaceful protest in Tan Tan strongly supressed by Moroccan authorities

TAN TAN (Morocco), July23,2013(SPS)- Moroccan authorities strongly suppressed a peaceful demonstration staged by young jobless Saharawi people in the town of Tan Tan, in the south of Morocco, leaving tens of them injured, according to a Sahrawi human rights source from the city

The young demonstrators claimed their right to work and denounced "their exclusion because of Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara," citing a statement by the Saharawi Coordination for Human Rights Defence.

Hundreds of Saharawi kids spend holidays in Algerian cities

Ain Temouchent (Algeria), July 22, 2013 (SPS) - One hundred Saharawi kids are spending their holidays since 18 July at a vacation camp in Beni Saf, 30 km from Ain Temouchent (Algeria), said Sunday the Province’s Social Action director, Mohamed Tayeb Djemai, quoted by Algerian Press Service (APS).


In relevant context, a total of 123 Saharawi children arrived Saturday night at Ain Ashir, a summer-camp site in the coastal city of Annaba, said Sunday the Saharawi Director of Youth and Sports.

Councilor of Social Affairs and Youth at Cartagena Municipality expresses support to Saharawi cause

Cartagena (Murcia, Spain), July 22, 2013 (SPS) - The Councilor of Social Affairs and Youth at the Municipality of Cartagena Dr. Antonio Calderón Rodríguez has confirmed his support to the cause and rights of the Saharawi people to self-determination and independence, in a meeting with the POLISARIO representative Mr. Mohamed Labàt Mustafà.


During the meeting, the councilor expressed commitment to contribute to the solidarity caravan the Polisario representation plans to organize next October in coordination with the solidarity movement.

Murcia University ready to fully cooperate with Saharawi academic institutions

Murcia (Spain), July 20, 2013 (SPS) - The President of the University of Murcia Mr. Jose Antonio Cobacho and the University stuff have expressed willingness to fully cooperate with the Saharawi academic institutions, in a meeting with the POLISARO Representative Mr. Mohamed Labat Mustapha.


The Saharawi representative informed his interlocutors about the difficult conditions experienced by the Saharawi refugees, especially with regard to the necessary possibilities in the field of education.

Abuja, July 20, 2013 (SPS) - The Saharawi Ambassador in Nigeria Mr. Abbi Bachraya Al-Bachir said, in a written press release distributed Friday, that the AU Special Summit on AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, held on 15-16 July in Abuja, was another opportunity to reinforce the prestigious status enjoyed by the Saharawi Republic (SADR) within the African Union, as a founding member state which is fully and permanently engaged in its activities and programmes.

SADR ambassador in Ecuador presents his credentials

Quito, July 18,2013 (SPS) - Ambassador Mohamed Salem Daha has presented Wednesday his credentials as Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic in the Republic of Ecuador.

 

The event, where the presents heard the national anthems of the two countries, was held at the Presidential Palace where SADR Ambassador Mohamed Salem Daha, was received by the Acting President Jorge Glas Espinel and Foreign Minister Ricardo Patiño, in the presence of other senior officials of the Presidency and the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry.

The film “Sons of the clouds” screened in Sydney

Sydney, July 19, 2013 (SPS)- The Australia Western Sahara Association (AWSA) organised on Thursday 18 July 2013 a public screening in Sydney of the documentary Sons of the Clouds by the famous Hollywood actor Javier Bardem

 

Bardem’s film traces the history of Western Sahara from Spanish occupation until the invasion and occupation by Morocco, and his passionate efforts to shed light on the just cause of  the Saharawi people.

 

The film was introduced by Mr. Bob Ellis, writer, journalist, film-maker and political commentator.

 

SADR takes part at the African Conference on the development of the role of teachers in Africa

Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), July 18, 2013 (SPS)- A Saharawi delegation led by the Minister of Education, Mrs. Mariem Essalek, participated Tuesday in the activities of the Third African Conference on developing the role of teachers of the African continent in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

 

The meeting was attended by the Ministers of Education of African States, officials of the Commission of the African Union and the Regional Economic Communities.

Sala (Morocco), July 17, 2013 (SPS) – The Moroccan occupation authorities  has transferred on Tuesday, the Sahrawi political detainee and human rights activist, Chairman of the Committee for supportto  the UN plan settlement and the protection of natural resources in Western Sahara, Mr. Sidahmad Lamjaed who is sentenced to life prison, to a Ibn Sina hospital in the capital Rabat, where he was notified of the postponement of the date of the medical examinations indefinitely, as reported statement  by the Ministry of the occupied territories and communities.

President of Republic delivers the congratulating speech of the Special Summit of the AU

Abuja, July16,2013 (SPS)- The President of the Republic, Mohamed Abdelaziz, delivered on Tuesday the final congratulating speech of the African Union Summit on AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria held on 15 and July 16 in Abuja, capital of Nigeria.

 

The closing session was devoted to the adoption of the Declaration of the Special Summit of the AU on such diseases, in the sense of implementing its findings.
