Mali: no evidence of risk of abduction of French nationals

BAMAKO - Malian government said Friday that, contrary to the assertions of the Embassy of France in Bamako, there is no "tangible" evidence on risk of kidnapping of French people on its territory.

RABAT - The land border between Morocco and Algeria closed seventeen years ago, will be reopened "sooner or later", said in Rabat Monday an Algerian minister during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen the food safety between the two countries.

TUNIS — Officials of Tunisia's former ruling party in the past 10 years will be barred from standing in elections on July 24, Prime Minister Beji Caid Essebsi announced Tuesday.

The time limit was cut from the 23 years some groups had asked for following the ouster in January of president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who had ruled since 1987 and was toppled by a popular uprising.

Morocco lobby group urges financial transparency

RABAT — The Transparency-Maroc (Morocco) Association on Tuesday called on all public institutions in the north African country to account for their spending and to accept inspections.

"We need to generalise the drawing up of accounts for all ... beneficiaries of public funds, particularly businesses and state bodies, as well as the Royal Armed Forces," the non-governmental organisation said in a memorandum.

A participant said that a group of fewer than 5,000 protesters organized a march through a working-class neighbourhood of the capital Rabat to call for constitutional reforms and new parliamentary elections.

CASABLANCA, Morocco - Thousands took to the streets of Morocco on Sunday in peaceful demonstrations to demand sweeping reforms and an end to political detention, the third day of mass protests since they began in February.

Desperate to avoid the turmoil that toppled leaders in Tunisia and Egypt, authorities have already announced some reforms to placate demands that King Mohammed cede more powers and limit the monarchy's extensive business influence.

El Aaiun (occupied territories) April 25, 2011 (SPS) - A violent intervention by the Moroccan occupation gendarmerie against a group of Saharawis exodus in Kneidalf region, in the suburbs of occupied El Aaiun, leads to injuries and detainees, according to sources of the Ministry of the Occupied Territories and Communities Abroad.

According to the same source, dozens of the Saharawi citizens were injured after they surrounded and assaulted by the Moroccan gendarmerie and assistant forces.

Prime Minister: UN Security Council is called to establish mechanism for human rights monitoring in Western Sahara

Auserd (refugee camps) April 25, 2011 (SPS) - “The Saharawi people is looking for the UN Security Council to establish a mechanism for monitoring human rights in Western Sahara,” the Prime Minister, Mr. Abdelkader Taleb Omar, said Sunday.

In a statement, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of the next meeting of the UN Security Council, saying “the Saharawis are waiting the UN Security Council to finally decide the establishment of a mechanism for monitoring human rights in Western Sahara.”

Saharawi and foreign participants, coming from several countries including South Africa, Venezuela, Cuba and Mauritania, have denounced the deteriorating situation of human rights in this region and the "despicable" crimes perpetrated by the Moroccan occupation against the Saharawi people defenseless.
