AU late summit’s outcome "harsh blow" to Moroccan thesis, says diplomat

Addis Ababa, Jan 4, 2014 (SPS) - The Permanent Representative of the Saharawi Republic (SADR) to the African Union (AU) Mr. Lamine Baali has highlighted that the 22nd African Union Summit, lately convened in Addis Ababa, was a "harsh blow" to the Moroccan thesis, adding that SADR presence within the AU "has further consolidated."

France supports Ross efforts to resolve Western Sahara conflict

Paris, Jan 04, 2014 (SPS) - The Spokesman of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr. Romain Nadal has indicated that his country (France) supports the efforts undertaken by the UN Envoy for Western Sahara, Christopher Ross, to resolve the conflict of Western Sahara.


“We support the efforts of Mr. Christopher Ross and maintain a regular dialogue with him as with the major stakeholders,” said Mr. Nadal, during a press briefing on Monday.

Guelemim (Morocco), February 2, 2014 (SPS) - Five Saharawi human rights activists have been arrested Friday evening in the town of Guelmim, in the south of Morocco, while on a visit to the family of Saharawi activist Mbarek Daoudi, incarcerated in the prison of Sale since November.

 

El Aaiun governor received by several municipalities mayors in Asturias

Asturias (Spain), February 2, 2014 (SPS) -  The governor of El Aaiun, Sahrawi refugee camps, Hamma Bunia, was received this weekend by several mayors of municipalities in Asturias, Spain.
 
According to news published by the newspaper " la Nueva España," Hamma Bunia was received by the mayor of Mieres, Aníbal Vázquez, who expressed political support of the City Council for the just cause of the Saharawi people.

Addis –Ababa (Ethiopia), February 1, 2014 (SPS) - Participants at the 22nd Ordinary Summit of the African Union (AU), which ended Friday in Addis Ababa, stressed the need for making food security in Africa "a priority" as well as security and peace.

 

The African leaders have called for strengthening peace and security and exploiting wealth and capabilities available in the continent.

 

Seminar on Western Sahara issue in Tokyo

Tokyo, February 1, 2014 (SPS) -  A Seminar on the issue of Western Sahara, the last colony in Africa, was held  Thursday in Meijigakuin university in Tokyo, Japan, attended by about 50 university students, 30 scholars and professors. 
 
The seminar studied the latest situation in Sahrawi refugee camps and the visit of the personal envoy of the United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Christopher Ross.

Addis Ababa, February 1, 2014 (SPS)  - Saharawi President Mohamed Abdelaziz called on African leaders in Addis Ababa to find a solution to the question of Western Sahara as soon as possible, "in line with international law and through a referendum on self-determination, which Africa has been the first to adopt."

Trial of Saharawi prisoner Mbarek Daoudi indefinitely postponed

Rabat, Jan 30, 2014 (SPS) - Trial of the Saharawi political prisoner Mbarek Daoudi has been indefinitely postponed by the Moroccan military court in Rabat, said a Saharawi human rights source.


Mbarek Daoudi appeared today morning in Rabat military court, in the absence of his family, international observers and Saharawi defenders of human rights.


A group of observers and lawyers from Spain and France arrived Thursday in Rabat to attend the trial, but they were prevented access into the court room. (SPS)

Zimbabwe renews support to legitimate struggle of Saharawi people

Harare, Jan 30, 2014 (SPS) - The Acting President of the Republic of Zimbabwe Ms. Joice Mujuru has reiterated her country’s support to the legitimate struggle of the Saharawi people for freedom and independence, according to a statement of SADR embassy in Zimbabwe.


In a meeting held today morning in Harare with the Saharawi Ambassador Mr. Deich Mohamed Salem, Ms. Mujuru expressed her government’s “constant and firm” position of support to the legitimate struggle of the Saharawi people.

Harare, Jan 30, 2014 (SPS) - Ambassador of the Saharawi Republic (SADR) in Zimbabwe Mr. Deich Mohamed Saleh received today, Thursday, in Harare by Ms. Joice Mujuru, the Acting President of the Republic of Zimbabwe.


In a statement to the press following the meeting, the Saharawi Ambassador indicated that the Acting President of Zimbabwe confirmed her government’s constant and firm position of support to the legitimate struggle of the Saharawis people.

African leaders examine food security challenges in the continent

Addis Ababa, Jan 30, 2014 (SPS) - The African Union leaders hold as from Thursday's morning in Addis Ababa their 22nd summit to examine the means to revive the sector of agriculture and opportunity creation for the achievement of food security and sustainable development, seen as one of the most important challenges to the continent.

 

This summit, to last over a couple of days is attended also by politicians and representatives of international and regional organizations.

 

Mauritania takes over African Union rotating presidency

Addis Ababa, Jan 30, 2014 (SPS) - President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania Mr. Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz took Thursday over the one-year rotating presidency of the African Union (AU), replacing Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn.


Mauritania took over the post during the opening of the 22nd African Union Summit, took place today morning in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia.

Saharawi people have right to ask compensation from EU, says Mohamed Sidati

Algiers, Jan 29, 2014 (SPS) - The Saharawi people have the right to claim compensation from the European Union (EU) for the consequences resulting from the fishing agreement it signed with Morocco, including “illegally” the Western Sahara’s territorial waters on which it has no authority, the Saharawi Minister Delegate for Europe Mr. Mohamed Sidati stated.
