SADR government “ready” to cooperate with AU to conduct self-determination referendum in Western Sahara

Algiers, Feb 3, 2013 (SPS) - The Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Salek welcomed Sunday in Algiers the decision taken at the recent African summit in designating the African Union Commission to take all measures for the holding of a referendum on self-determination in Western Sahara, expressing readiness of the Saharawi government to contribute to the realization of this endeavour.

 

South African Solidarity Movement condemns military court of Gdeim Izik detainees

Pretoria, Feb 3, 2013 (SPS) - The South African Movement of Solidarity with the Saharawi People condemned, in a memorandum issued on Thursday, the military trial that was planned for Friday against Gdeim izik prisoners, calling Morocco to ensure that no civilians and activists defending human rights are tried in front of the Military Court.

Swedish food chains unite in avoiding occupied Western Sahara’s goods

Stockholm, Feb 3, 2013 (SPS) - Four major Swedish food chains signed on 22 Jan 2013 a letter of intent with the Swedish Western Sahara support network VästsaharaAktionen, outlining their stance vis-à-vis produce imports from Western Sahara.


The four food chains are Axfood, Coop, ICA and Bergendahls/City Gross.

AU Commission Chairperson affirms determination to work for decolonization of Western Sahara

Addis Ababa, Feb 2, 2013 (SPS) - The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Dr. Nkosazana Clarice Dlamini-Zuma has affirmed the Union’s strong resolve to continue supporting and defending the right of Saharawi Republic to recover its territories occupied by Moroccan Kingdom, in a statement on the sidelines of a farewell meeting on honour of the Saharawi Ambassador Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, after the end of his missions as a permanent representative of SADR to the AU.

Trial of Gdeim Izik detainees postponed to next Friday

Rabat, Feb 2, 2012 (SPS) - The military court of Rabat postponed Friday the trial of the 24 Saharawi political prisoners, arrested following the dismantling of Gdeim Izik camp, to next Friday, informed a close source to families of the group.


The court decided to postpone the trial after the lawyers submitted a petition demanding the presence of eyewitnesses the arrests that took place on 8 Nov 2010 following Moroccan forces’ attack on Gdeim izik camp, near El Aaiun, said the source.

Western Sahara: French FM questioned in Parliament on self-determination referendum

Paris, Feb 2, 2013 (SPS) - French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius was questioned by Parliament, through senator Leila Aichi, about the referendum on self-determination in Western Sahara.


"The political situation in Western Sahara seemed to have reached a deadlock in Western Sahara, while the living conditions of Saharawi refugees are a real matter of concern," the French Senator wrote in a statement.

The Autonomous Government of Murcia reiterates its commitment to the Sahrawi refugees

President of South Sudan called on Morocco to recognize SADR.

Christopher Ross heads to Moscow after talks in Washington

 New York (UN) January30, 2013 – The United Nations envoy for Western Sahara Christopher Ross, is on his way to the Russian capital, Moscow, as part of consultations designed to build international support for the negotiations aimed at resolving the long-running conflict.
 

“These consultations aim at building additional international support for the Western Sahara negotiations in preparation for the next phase of engagement with the parties and neighbouring States, foreseen for March,” UN spokesperson Eduardo Del Buey told reporters in New York.

AU Council of Ministers approves resolution on self-determination referendum in Western Sahara

Addis Ababa, Jan 28, 2013 (SPS) - The African Union Council of Ministers has unanimously has approved a resolution asking AU Commission to take “all measures” in order to organize a referendum on self-determination in Western Sahara, the AU agency said Sunday in Addis Ababa.


The resolution comes after a broad discussion by the AU Council of Ministers on the conflicts in Africa, including Western Sahara, based on the regulations of the Organization of African Unity and United Nations.

European MPs demand Ashton’s intervention to stop military trial of Saharawi prisoners

Mauritanian NGO condemns bringing of the Group of Gdaim Izik before military court

Nouakchott (Mauritania) January 24, 2013(SPS) the Mauritanian League of Solidarity with the Saharawi People, on Tuesday, condemned the decision of   the Moroccan Authorities to bring Saharawi political prisoners known as the Group of Gdaim Izik before a military court in early February.
 

 “It is shame to bring detainees of the Saharawi uprising for independence before a military court in the era of the Arab spring and people’s desire to freedom and emancipation” said the NGO in a press release reached SPS.
