Addis Ababa, January 26, 2012 (SPS) - Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, has called for intensifying the international efforts to enable the Saharawi people of their rights to self- determinations and independence.
"It is important that international efforts to resolve this long standing conflict be intensified towards the holding of a referendum to enable the people of Western Sahara to choose between the option of independence and that of integration.", said Dlamini-Zuma said in her annual report on AU Commission activities.
“To this end, the Commission‘s interactions with the United Nations and other international actors are Being furthered” she added .
The report underlined “no progress has been made during the period under review on the question of Western Sahara.”
it recalled éthe resolution 2044 (2012) of the UN Security Council adopted on 24 April 2012, renewed its call on the Parties, namely the Frente POLISARIO and the Kingdom of Morocco to continue to negotiate without preconditions and urged them to Cooperate with the mediation.”
“It is important that international efforts to resolve this long standing conflict be expedited, with a view to finding a solution that is consistent with international legality”, said the report. (SPS)
