MINURSO, only UN mission not yet mandated to monitor human rights

Algiers, Nov 12, 2013 (SPS) - The United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) is "the only contemporary mission of peacekeeping without a mandate to monitor human rights," a diplomatic source reported.


This observation has been recalled in a message by U.S. NGO Robert F. Kennedy Center in a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry, who will travel soon to Rabat.

Violation against Algerian consulate in Casablanca: Algeria renews request to be associated with investigation

Algiers, November 11, 2013 (SPS) - Foreign Minister, Ramtane Lamamra, renewed Sunday in Algiers, Algeria’s request to be associated with the investigation into the violation against Algerian general consulate in Casablanca in Morocco, while "rejecting" the theses of "isolated act."

 

"Algeria, which has officially requested to be associated with the investigation, has all the reasons to reject the thesis of the isolated act. The visual evidences exist," Lamamra told a news conference jointly run with Minister of Communication, Abdelkader Messahel.

No divergence between Algeria and U.S. on human rights in Western Sahara

Algiers, November 10, 2013 (SPS) - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ramtane Lamamra, declared Sunday in Algiers that there is no divergence between Algeria and the U.S. on human rights issue in Western Sahara.

 

Lamamra told a press conference held jointly with Minister of Communication, Abdelkader Messahel, that "there is no divergence between the United States and Algeria on human Rights issue in Western Sahara," adding that "things are perfectly clear about this. "

 

Rally in Paris to call for release of Saharawi political prisoners

Paris (France), November 10, 2013 (SPS) - A rally to demand the “unconditional” release of the Saharawi political prisoners, detained in the Moroccan jails, was held Saturday in Paris at the initiative of the League of Saharawi Students in France (LJESF).

 

Carrying Saharawi flags and photos of Saharawi prisoners, the demonstrators chanted slogans against the Moroccan government and claimed a referendum of self-determination under the aegis of the United Nations.

Western Sahara: Algeria’s positions are "consistent" and "firm," says Lamamra

Algiers, November 10, 2013 (SPS) - Algeria’s positions over Western Sahara issue are "consistent" and "firm," Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra said Sunday in Algiers.

 

"The positions of Algeria are consistent and firm. We clearly make distinction between Western Sahara question, which is a decolonization issue that is addressed by the United Nations, and our bilateral relations (with Morocco)," Lamamra told a news conference jointly held with Minister of Communication Abdelkader Messahel.

 

John Kerry’s visit to Algeria postponed by mutual agreement

Algiers, November 10, 2013 (SPS) - The visit of US Secretary of State John Kerry was due to pay to Algeria has been postponed by mutual agreement," said Friday the Foreign Affairs ministry’s spokesman, Amar Belani.

 

"Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra received Friday afternoon a phone call from US Secretary of State John Kerry, who told him that President Barack Obama asked him to go to Geneva as part of the ongoing negotiations on the Iranian nuclear programme," Belani said.

 

Western Sahara, a UN issue

Shaheed El Hafed (Sahrawi refugee camps), November 10, 2013 (SPS) - The Western Sahara issue has always been under United Nations (UN) which had, from 1963 to 1964, put the country on the list of non-autonomous territories to be decolonized, by dedicating through this status the right of the people of Western Sahara to self-determination and independence.

 

Since then, the legitimate right was supported and endorsed by the Organization of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU), as part of its policy of total decolonization of the continent.

Adoption of Tannock report makes urgent Sahrawis claim for self-determination

Paris, November 9, 2013 (SPS) - The General Secretary of the Association of Friends of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Régine Villemont, affirmed that in the recently- adopted Charles Tannock report by the European Parliament (EP), exists the conviction that the Sahel-Western Sahara issue is "exhaustive", which makes "urgent and legitimate" Sahrawis claim for self-determination.

 

Moroccan king's speech reflects isolation of Morocco, says Ould Essalek

Morocco-EU fisheries agreement: illegal, says MEP

Brussels, November 9, 2013 (SPS)  – Member of the European Parliament, Spanish Raul Romega said that the agreement on fisheries between Morocco and the European Union "is illegal" as "contrary to international law," noting that Morocco is seeking "a European political support" to the occupation of Western Sahara.

 

Addressing the Committee on Fisheries and Agriculture of the European Parliament, Romega said that the fisheries agreement between Morocco and the EU "is illegal as contrary to international law."

 

Rights of Saharawi prisoners: An international mission notes numerous violations

Saharawi delegation holds talks with President of Peruvian Congress

Lima, Nov 8, 2013 (SPS) - A Saharawi delegation, led by the Minister-Delegate for Latin America Mr. Hash Ahmed and includes the ambassador in mission Mr. Ali Salem Sid Ezzain, held talks on Thursday with Mr. Freddy Otárola, President of the Congress of Peru, along with the Vice-President Mr. Carmen Omonte, as well as several leaders and parliamentarians from various political blocs, said a statement issued Thursday.
