Ban Ki-moon begins 2nd term as UN Chief

New York, 02 Jan, 2012 (SPS) - With the start of New Year 2012, the second consecutive term for the United Nations General Secretary Ban Ki Moon has also come into effect.

 

Ban Ki-moon, who commences his second term Sunday, said that he hoped the New Year would continue the move towards democracy that protesters had started during the so-called Arab Spring in 2011.

 

Spanish cooperators spend New Year’s Day with the Saharawi people

South Africa assumes the presidency of UN Security Council

United Nations, January 1, 2011 (SPS) - The Republic of South Africa assumed Sunday the presidency of the Security Council of the United Nations for the month of January 2012.

The African country replaces Russia, who led the work of that body of 15 seats in the last month of the ending year, according to Prensa Latina.

The Security Council consists of 15 members, of whom 5 are permanent and 10 are elected by the General Assembly for a period of 2 years.

Denmark takes over EU Presidency

Cubans celebrate 53rd anniversary of Independence Day

Habana, January 1, 2011 (SPS) - People of Cuba celebrated Sunday, January 1st, the fifty-third Anniversary of Independence Day, with a programme of festivities including festivals, concerts and historical activities in all Cuban provinces.

The eastern city of Santiago de Cuba has received the usual ceremony of the celebrations for this event.

NGOs urge Russia to withdraw its fishing boats from Western Sahara

Brussels, January 1, 2011 (SPS) - Western Sahara Resource Watch network (WSRW), comprising non-governmental organizations from about thirty countries around the world, has urged the Russian government to “immediately follow the European Union’s example and withdraw its fishing boats from Western Sahara occupied by Morocco,” said the network’s release.

New Year's Eve 2012: Celebrations around the world

London, 1 January 2012 (SPS) - A multi-million dollar firework display heralded in the new year in Sydney, while the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, was illuminated in Dubai.

 

Celebrations were held across Europe, with some 250,000 gathering to watch fireworks over the River Thames.

 

In Times Square in New York, crowds watched Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Lady Gaga count down to midnight.

 

Re-appointment of Mr. Abdelkader Taleb Omar as prime minister in the Saharawi government

Shaheed Al Hafed (refugee camps), January 1, 2012 (SPS) - The President of the Republic and Secretary General of the Frente Polisario, Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz, re-appointed Saturday Mr. Abdelakader Taleb Omar a Prime Minister in the government of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), according to a statement issued by SADR Presidency.

The appointment comes under the Article 53 of SADR Constitution issue by the Thirteenth Congress of the Polisario Front, which was held in the liberated territory of Tifariti in the period from Dec 15 to 22, 2011.
