Gaborone (Botswana), 21 November 2020 (SPS) - Botswana Federation of Trade Unions (BFTU) called on the United Nation and African Union to assume responsibility on putting pressure to withdraw to its internationally-recognized borders and respect its neighbours, to ensure peace, security and stability in the region, the continent and the entire world.
BFTU urged Morocco “to withdraw to its internationally recognized boundaries per international law and respect its neighbours for the sake of peace and security in the region, Africa and the world.”
It also urged “the African Union and all its member countries to apply their diplomatic influence and persuade Morocco to see and respect the constitutive act of the continental body of which both Morocco and SADR are members.”
In the same context, BFTU expressed concern over consequences of this war, calling on the parties to return to negotiations in order to achieve “a coordinated decolonization of the last colony in the African continent.”
The decolonization of Western Sahara, BFTU considers, “can be accomplished under the stewardship of the African Union and the United Nations system and the relevant principles of respect of the right of the people to self-determination and to sovereignty over their land, their fate and their resources must be upheld.”
It should be recalled that members of the leadership of BFTU paid a visit to the Saharawi Embassy in Gaborone last Friday 13 November the very day of the Moroccan violation of the cease-fire, where they met the Saharawi Ambassador, Mr. Malainin Mohamed, who provide them with detailed information about what’s happening nowadays in the region.
