New York, 16 December 2019 (SPS) -The United Nations (UN) General Assembly adopted on Friday a new resolution by which it reaffirmed its responsibilities to the Sahrawi people and their inalienable right to self-determination, reiterating its support for the UN-led process for the settlement of Western Sahara issue.
In last October, the United Nations Special Political and Decolonization Committee (Fourth Committee) adopted this recommendation entitled "Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples.”
Following the adoption by the UN General Assembly of this resolution, the Sahrawi Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Ould Salek said that "the United Nations and the African Union (AU) must understand that the Moroccan occupier does not care about international decisions and does not respect its commitments signed with the Sahrawi side, under their auspices and therefore, they must oblige it to cease the illegal occupation of parts of the Sahrawi territory and to respect its internationally recognized borders.”
According to the Sahrawi News Agency (SPS), Ould Salek said that the world "unanimously recognizes that Morocco prevents MINURSO (United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara) from holding a referendum on self-determination, because it is convinced of the Sahrawi people's commitment to their right to independence, for which they sacrificed many martyrs.”
"The Sahrawi people will assume their responsibility in their legitimate defence and will not accept any further delay in diverting the Sahrawi issue from its process and legal status.” SPS
