New York (UN), 23 April 2022 (SPS) - The members of the United Nations (UN) Security Council reiterated Wednesday their support for the efforts of the UN Secretary General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura to revive the negotiations between the two parties to the conflict, namely the Polisario Front and Morocco.
Speaking at a meeting on the latest developments in Western Sahara, the personal envoy welcomed “the strong support he received to revive the political process aimed at finding a solution to the conflict in Western Sahara.”
Staffan de Mistura also announced that he would soon be on a new tour in the region in an attempt to advance the process.
According to diplomatic resources, the UN envoy did not reveal the date of his tour nor the areas he planned to visit.
De Mistura’s upcoming tour is the second in the region since his appointment in last October as a personal envoy for Western Sahara, in replacement of the previous German President, Horst Kohler, who resigned on 22 May 2019.
The UN official was on a tour to the region from 12 to 19 January 2022. He visited Morocco, the Sahrawi refugee camps, Mauritanian, and Algeria as a neighboring country, as stipulated in the UN settlement plan.
