Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), February 19, 2023 (SPS) - President of Algeria Abdelmadjid Tebboune has called on the African Union to assume its full responsibility towards the Sahrawi issue.
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in a speech to African leaders at the 36th EU Summit, read on his behalf by Prime Minister Aymen Benabderrahmane, stressed that in the midst of these dangerous developments, "it has become imperative that our Organization assumes its full responsibility towards this issue and play the role entrusted to it, in accordance with its firm doctrine of decolonization."
The Algerian Republic reiterated "Algeria's unwavering support for the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination through the organization of a free and fair referendum, in line with international conventions and resolutions."
In this regard, he stressed that "desperate attempts to obstruct the ongoing process of decolonization and unilateral decisions that violate international law and contravene the principles of the African Union can in no way legitimize the occupation of Sahrawi territories nor prejudice the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination."
