Washington proposes Security Council mission to Western Sahara

Submitted on

New York (United Nations), October 20, 2016 (SPS) - The United States proposed Tuesday at the UN Security Council to send a mission to Western Sahara to speed up UN  process for the settlement the conflict between Polisario Front and Morocco.
The American proposal, made at a Security Council meeting on Western Sahara Tuesday, has been approved by all the member states of the UN body, Ahmed Boukhari, the representative of the Polisario Front at the United Nations, told APS.
There was no opposition, at the Security Council, to the United States' proposal, he said.
The Security Council made a similar mission in Western Sahara in 1995, but the absence of  consensus among its members prevented it to go back again to the territory.

Boukhari, who welcomed the US proposal, said the mission will "show Security Council's interest in being on the ground of a conflict high on its agenda." SPS
