New York (United Nations) 7 October 2022 (SPS)- Representative of Frente Polisario at the UN, Ambassador Sidi Mohamed Omar, indicated yesterday in his statement before the UN Committee on Decolonisation that the Saharawi people will never give up their right to self-determination and independence and will continue fighting for it.
“Today, the Sahrawi people tell you once again and loud and clear that they will never give up their inalienable and non-negotiable right to self-determination and independence and that they will continue to use all legitimate means to defend their rights,” he said.
Following is the full text of the statement:

Statement of the Frente POLISARIO on the Question of Western Sahara before the UN Special Political and Decolonisation Committee
Ambassador Sidi Mohamed Omar
Representative of the Frente POLISARIO at the United Nations
Coordinator with MINURSO
New York, 6 October 2022
Mr Chair
Distinguished Representatives and Delegates of Member States
Ladies and gentlemen
It is a pleasure for me to take the floor again to address the Special Political and Decolonisation Committee on behalf of the Frente POLISARIO, the legitimate and sole Representative of the people of the Non-Self-Governing Territory of Western Sahara in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly.
Mr Chair
Ladies and Gentlemen
Time does not allow to provide a detailed account of the current situation of the Non-Self-Governing Territory of Western Sahara, which has been on the agenda of this Committee since 1963.
I however would like to tell you loud and clear that the Sahrawi people who look to the United Nations as the guardian and defender of peoples’ right to self-determination, have had enough of the many promises that are not fulfilled and the many resolutions that remain words unaccompanied by actions.
The continuation of the illegal occupation of parts of Western Sahara by Morocco since 1975 and the blatant attempts by the occupying state to impede the decolonisation of the Territory and to forcibly impose a fait accompli in the Sahrawi occupied territories are a cause of shame and represent an insult to the United Nations Charter and to all that which this Committee stands for.
Therefore, time has come for this Committee and the United Nations to translate its resolutions into actions and to take concrete measures to speed up the decolonisation of the last remaining Colony in Africa.
Double standards, selectivity, and complacency in the face of the logic of force can no longer be tolerated in the rules-based international order that the United Nations represents and that you, Member States, cherish and defend.
Mr Chair
Ladies and Gentlemen,
The people of the Non-Self-Governing Territory of Western Sahara are victims of a persistent injustice that must not be allowed to endure any longer. The unspeakable brutality and oppression to which Sahrawi civilians are being subjected daily in the illegally Occupied Western Sahara at the hands of Moroccan security forces urgently call for a firm stand and action by the United Nations and the international community.
In concluding, I would like to reiterate that the Frente POLISARIO remains fully committed to achieving a peaceful and lasting solution to the decolonisation of Western Sahara.
In its resolution 2983 (XXVII) of 14 December 1972, the General Assembly reaffirmed the legitimacy of the struggle of the colonial peoples and its solidarity with, and support, for the people of Western Sahara in their struggle for self-determination and independence.
Today, the Sahrawi people tell you once again and loud and clear that they will never give up their inalienable and non-negotiable right to self-determination and independence and that they will continue to use all legitimate means to defend their rights.
I thank you for your attention." (SPS)
