New York (United Nations), Sept 26, 2019 (SPS) - UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres submitted a report to the General Assembly on the rights of peoples to self-determination, in which he informed the deliberative body of the UN organization of the progress of the Western Sahara issue.
The report, which was included in the agenda of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly, was handed over to the UN General Assembly in accordance with regulation 73/160, which requested the Secretary-General to prepare a report on peoples' right to self-determination.
The report comes as the UN seeks to find a new envoy for Western Sahara in order to continue political negotiations on the autonomous region after the resignation of former personal envoy Horst Kohler.
This report describes the situation on the ground, the status of the progress of the political negotiations on Western Sahara, the progress recorded in the implementation of UNSCR 2414 (2018), as well as the difficulties faced by MINURSO operations, said Guterres.
The report further highlights the importance of MINURSO, which remains "an essential tool in the efforts depolyed by the United Nations to reach a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution in Western Shara," he added.SPS
