Washington, 24 April 2023 (SPS) - The United States has underlined its full support for UN efforts to advance the political process in Western Sahara, according to a State Department statement following a meeting between Assistant Secretary of State Wendy Sherman and the UN Secretary General's Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura.
In this context, Sherman stressed on Friday "the full support of the United States for the efforts of the Personal Envoy to advance the ongoing UN-led political process for Western Sahara" and welcomed "the vision" of Staffan de Mistura to "intensify his consultations to this end", said the Principal Deputy Spokesperson, Vedant Patel.
The two officials discussed the importance of building on the momentum of the substantive consultations organized by the UN in March to achieve a "lasting and dignified" political solution for the people of Western Sahara, the same source added.
Staffan de Mistura presented Wednesday, during closed consultations at the Security Council, a report on the current situation in the Saharawi territories occupied by Morocco.
De Mistura also spoke about the work and role of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), and ways to revive the political process on this issue, it should be recalled.
