New York (United Nations), April 25, 2023 (SPS)- Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, the member of the National Secretariat, representative of the Polisario Front at the United Nations and coordinator with the MINURSO, stressed that the Sahrawi people are strong in believing in the fairness of their cause, their valiant army, their unity, and their legitimate and only representative the Polisario Front.
During a meeting with Sahrawi national television “RASD TV”, which was centered on the closed consultations session held by the Security Council on the United Nations Referendum Mission in Western Sahara (MINURSO) on April 19, Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar stressed that the Sahrawi people have decided their fate since the establishment of the Polisario Front and their independent state.
In this context, Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar pointed out that the confirmation that took place during the consultations by the members of the Security Council, for the need to reach a just and lasting solution to guarantee the right of the people of Western Sahara to self -determination and independence remains the basis of any United Nations peace process in Western Sahara and an indispensable condition for security and peace in the region.
He also touched on the issue of human rights after the continuation of the Moroccan occupation state in its blatant violations of human rights in the occupied territories of the Sahrawi Republic, where he drew attention to the indication of members of the Security Council that the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights is unable to visit the occupied Sahrawi territories for the seventh year due to the obstruction of the Moroccan occupation.
This is evidence, said the Sahrawi diplomat, of the importance of this issue for the members of the Security Council, as well as the need for the United Nations and its specialized bodies to establish an independent and permanent international mechanism to monitor and report on the human rights situation in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.
As stated in the statement issued after the Security Council consultations, the representative of the Polisario Front at the United Nations and coordinator with the MINURSO confirmed again the position of the Sahrawi party announced by the sixteenth Congress of the Polisario Front, which called for the escalation of the fight and to continue the struggle with all the legitimate means to allow the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination and independence.
