Prime Minister: UN Security Council is called to establish mechanism for human rights monitoring in Western Sahara

Auserd (refugee camps) April 25, 2011 (SPS) - “The Saharawi people is looking for the UN Security Council to establish a mechanism for monitoring human rights in Western Sahara,” the Prime Minister, Mr. Abdelkader Taleb Omar, said Sunday.

In a statement, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of the next meeting of the UN Security Council, saying “the Saharawis are waiting the UN Security Council to finally decide the establishment of a mechanism for monitoring human rights in Western Sahara.”

 


Mr. Taleb Omar expressed hope of the Saharawi people to see the UN Security Council adopt a resolution meets their aspirations of a referendum on self-determination as pointed by the UN Secretary General in its latest report on Western Sahara."

“A referendum of self-determination is the only way for a just and peaceful solution to the Western Sahara conflict,” the Prime Minister said.

He  has hopped that the Security Council extend the mandate of MINURSO for six months instead of one year as usual, saying “a period of six months would energize the search for a solution.”

On other hand, He confirmed that the next congress of the Polisario Front will decide “whether continue in the same way or use other lawful means for the independence of Western Sahara.”

The UN Security Council will meet Wednesday to study the Saharawi cause on the light of the latest report of the UN Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, delivered to the Security Council, according to the Council’s agenda. (SPS)
