Juba (South Sudan) July 9, 2011 (SPS) - The President of the Republic and Secretary General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz, arrived Friday in Juba, South Sudan, to attend the official proclamation of the independence of South Sudan Republic, at the invitation of the President of its government, Mr. Salva Kiir Mayardit.
He was received at Juba’s airport by the Minister of Foreign Affairs in South Sudan’s government, Mr. Deng Alor, with a number of officials and politicians.
“The success of the referendum in South Sudan is a victory for the principle of self determination,” Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz told the press, pointing out that Morocco “does not respect this right in Western Sahara.”
He also expressed hope that the Moroccan Kingdom act in response to this lesson, adding that respecting wishes of the peoples and requirements of the international legitimacy “are key for just and durable peace.
The president of the Republic is accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Salek, Ambassador in Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the AU, Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, Counselor to the Presidency, Abdati Breika.
It is note worthy that the South Sudanese people celebrate Saturday the declaration of the independence of South Sudan’s Republic as an independent state, as a result to the referendum of self-determination held on January 9 this year where they overwhelmingly voted for the option of independence.
Declaration of the independence of South Sudan will end the transitional period provided for in the 2005 Peace Agreement signed in Kenya between the Republic of Sudan and Sudan’s People Liberation Movement, which ended long-standing conflict in the region since 1962.
The ceremony is attended by heads of state and government, delegation from all continents of the worlds, delegations of international and regional organizations and crowd of audio-visual and written media. (SPS)
