Rome, Oct 14,2011 (SPS)- The Mayor of the Italian region of Tuscany, Pelago Renzo Zucchini, has called on the highest Italian authorities to intervene to put an end to repression perpetrated by Morocco against the Sahrawi people in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, said Saturday a media source in Rome.
In a letter addressed to the Italian President and dignitaries in the Italian State, Mr. Zucchini denounced the new wave of harassment and repression carried out by Morocco against the Saharawi people in the occupied territories.
The Italian official indicated that the primary responsibility of the municipality of Pelago, supported by other heads of municipalities in the province of Florence, is “to raise awareness of the international public opinion against the continuous and intolerable violations of human rights in Western Sahara,”
“The municipality of Pelago, which maintains special bonds of friendship with the Saharawi people, expresses its strong rejection to such acts and conditions imposed by the Moroccan occupation on the Sahrawi people,” said the Mayor.
The Italian mayor therefore expressed his full support to the Saharawi people, calling on the international organizations to intensify the diplomatic efforts through taking the means of legitimacy and international law to support the Saharawi people, who is struggling peacefully for years to live in peace within its territorial borders, in conformity with the fundamental principle of self-determination to all peoples.
Mr. Renzo Zucchini urged the highest authorities of Italy to engage and contribute to a settlement of the Western Sahara conflict guaranteeing for the Saharawi people the right to peaceful life as requested by many resolutions of the UN Security Council. (SPS)
