Amsterdam, Feb 4, 2012 (SPS) - The International Organization “Green peace” has classified Mercadona’s Spanish company as one of the worst companies in the world for the year 2011 for its involvement in looting of the Western Sahara fishing wealth, during the announcement of the worst 40 companies that do not respect international law and environment.

The Organization said in its justification to this choice that Mercadona has taken advantage of the resources of Western Sahara, occupied by Morocco, and plundered about 30 million tons of sardines, which Greenpeace considering it “a supporting the occupation of Western Sahara and thereby the ensuing oppressive rule by Morocco.”

The campaign was promoted by Western Sahara Resource Watch, Sahara Thawra, Platform of the Political Support for the Saharawi People and League of the Saharawi Students in Spain.

Greenpeace has organized the Public Eye Awards every year since the year 2000, in which the prestigious international Non Government Organization chooses to name and shame in public those companies which have demonstrated in its view the worst ethical, social or environmental behavior. (SPS)
