AI calls on France not to block human rights monitoring in Western Sahara

Submitted on

Madrid, April 19, 2012 (SPS) - Amnesty International (AI) has launched a campaign to demand France "to not block a component of human rights monitoring" within MINURSO mandate.

AI aims at sending petition to French Foreign Minister, Alain Juppe, in which it "urges France to not block component of human rights monitoring in the next vote on renewing the mandate of MINURSO."

Amnesty International considers that "the events in Gdim Izik and Laayoune in November 2010 illustrate the ongoing tension and the need for supervision."

“MINURSO is one of the few missions that it has established under the authority of the Security Council and that does not include a human rights component”, said AI.

It believes that "this mechanism would be helpful to document human rights violations and help the parties to overcome mutual distrust and build a conducive environment for the political negotiations." (SPS)
