Delegation of Southern African Development Community arrives in Saharawi refugee camps

Shaheed Al Hafed (refugee camps), June 15, 2012 (SPS) - A high-level delegation of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which comprises the foreign ministers of Zimbabwe, South Africa and Zambia, in addition to ambassadors and deputies arrived Thursday afternoon in the Saharawi refugee camps, where they received at headquarters of the presidency by the President of the Republic and Secretary General of the POLISARIO, Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz.


The meeting, which was attended by members of the National Secretariat, Government and National Council, focused on the joint cooperation between the Saharawi Republic (SADR) and SADC.


After the meeting, president of the delegation and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Zimbabwe Mr. Simbarashe Mumbengegwi told the press that they come as representatives of states and governments of SADC to hand a special letter from the Bloc’s head, President of Angola Mr. José Eduardo dos Santos, to the President Mohamed Abdelaziz.


Mumbengegwi reiterated SADC’s “commitment to defend right of the Saharawi people to establish their free and independent state,” expressing gratitude for the warm reception they had by the people, government and president of the Saharawi Republic.


The delegation arrived Thursday evening in the Saharawi Refugee Camps, where they hosted by a military parade in the presence of the Minister of Defense Mr. Mohamed Lamin Bouhali and leaders of the Saharawi People’s Liberation Army.


A public reception honoring the delegation also held in recognition of the positions of African Continent in the defense of Saharawi people’s right for freedom and independence.


The visit is the first of its kind for a high-level delegation of the Southern African Development Community. (SPS)
