ACHPR delegation holds several meetings in Saharawi refugee camps

Chahid Al Hafed (refugee camps), Sept 28, 2012 (SPS) - The Delegation of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR), visiting the Saharawi refugee camps, held several meetings with representatives of the Saharawi civil society, cadres and officials.


The delegation met Thursday at headquarters of the Association of Families of the Saharawi Prisoners and Disappeared (AFAPREDESA) with components of the Saharawi civil society.


During the meeting, President of AFAPREDESA Mr. Abdeslam Omar spoke about the human rights violation committed by Morocco against the defenseless Saharawi civilians in occupied Western Sahara, calling on ACHPR to speedily intervene to put an end to these abuses.


Mr. Omar also called for the unconditional release of all the Saharawi political prisoners, as to reveal the whereabouts of more than 650 Saharawis missing.


Secretary General of the Saharawi Youth Union (UJSARIO) Mr. Mousa Selma held the African organization responsibility to transmit voice of the Saharawi people, especially young people, to the leaders and heads of African countries.


From his part, representative of the Saharawi Students Union informed the delegation about the violations the Saharawi students suffer especially in Morocco’s universities, urging the African rights delegation to the contribution to pressurize Moroccan state end suffering of the Saharawi people.


In the same day, the delegation held meeting with cadres of the judiciary corps in the Ministry of Justice and Religious Affairs of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, where they heard to explanations about work of the institution including how the laws are being enacted and investiture of judges.


They also met with the President of the Saharawi Red Crescent Mr. Mouhabaini Yahia.


During the meeting, the Saharawi official presented detailed explanations on how the humanitarian aids are being distributed, pointing to the great lack the humanitarian assistance witnesses in recent years.


He also stressed on the importance and urgent need for such visit to convey suffering of the Saharawis, who are living under severe conditions and deprived of the minimum requirements of decent living. (SPS)
