Saharawi-French Friendship Association demands extension of MINURSO mandate

Submitted on

Paris, Sept 28, 2012 (SPS) - The Association of the Friends of Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) in France has expressed hope for the extension of the mandate of UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to include the protection of human rights, following the recent visit of the UN Special Rapporteur on torture to Morocco and occupied Western Sahara.

“This task, which has long been awaited, will be able to act and pressurize in favor of the enlargement of MINURSO powers,” stated the Association in a letter on Thursday.
The Association said that France should first of all raise the Veto, which hampers the extension of MINURSO mandate, inside the Security Council.

It therefore expressed support to the informal negotiations and talks being held under auspices of the United Nations. (SPS)
