Palermo conference on Mediterranean peace voices support to Saharawi people’s self-determination

Palermo, Sicily (Italy), Oct 8, 2012 (SPS) - Delegations of several countries that took place in a conference on peace in the Mediterranean, held from 5 to 7 October 2012 in Palermo in Sicily (Italy), have voiced support to the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination, condemning repression and oppression carried out by Morocco in Western Sahara, according to the Saharawi Representation to Europe.


The Conference was attended by several progressive parties and organizations around the Mediterranean.


During the two-day conference, several delegations including that of Spain, Greece, Germany, Egypt, France and Italy voiced support to the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination, condemning repression and oppression carried out Morocco in Western Sahara, and calling for further solidarity with the just struggle of the Saharawi people.


In the final declaration, the participants expressed “support” to a solution of conflict in Western Sahara on the basis of a referendum on self-determination for the Saharawi people in accordance with UN resolutions.


In addition, the conference called for the respect for human rights in Western Sahara, asking Morocco to release all the Saharawi political prisoners.


The conference was attended by a Saharawi delegation composed of respectively the Minister Delegate for Europe and POLISARIO Representative to Italy, Mr. Mohamed Sidati and Mr. Omar Mih.


The event was an opportunity for the Saharawi delegation to hold talks with representatives of political parties and organizations present at this important conference. (SPS)
