Prime Minister receives UN Envoy Christopher Ross

Chahid Al Hafed (refugee camps), Nov 4, 2012 (SPS) - The Prime Minister Mr. Abdelkader Taleb Omar received Sunday morning at headquarters of the Prime Ministry in Chahid Al Hafed, Saharawi refugee camps, the UN Secretary General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara Mr. Christopher Ross, who is visiting the Camps as a part of a tour to North Africa and Europe.


The meeting was attended by the Minister of Interior Mr. Hamada Salma, Secretary General of SADR Government and Saharawi cadres.


The meeting focused on mission of the UN Envoy and prospects of settlement.
The Saharawi PM felicitated Ross for the confidence he enjoys by the Security Council and United Nations, reaffirming support of the POLISARIO Front and SADR Government to his endeavours aimed at reaching a solution ensuring right of the Saharawi people to self-determination.


Mr. Abdelkader Taleb Omar asked the UN to accelerate the implementation of the UN and Security Council’s resolutions and recommendations that call for the organization of the self-determination referendum of the Saharawi people, reiterating call to lift the siege imposed over the Territory, enable MINURSO to monitor and report about human rights, as to allow the access into occupied Western Sahara for international journalists and independent observers.


Prime Minister therefore urged Mr. Ross to work for halting Moroccan violations of human rights and pillaging of the natural resources of Western Sahara, which is still under direct responsibility of the UN pending decolonization process to take place.


The UN Secretary General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara held several other meetings with the Ministers of Culture Ms. Khadija Hamdi, Education Ms. Mariam Salek Hmada, Public Employment Ms. Khira Ballahi, in addition to the Governor of the Wilaya of Boujdour Ms. Azza Babih and Secretary General of the Saharawi Woman Union.


He also paid a field visit to the Institution of Statistics and National Documentation. (SPS)
