Human rights situation in Western Sahara: Italian MPs urges EU action

Rome (Italy) March14,2013(SPS) - A delegation of the Italian parliamentary inter-group of friendship with Sahrawi people called on Italy’s Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi on the "need" for an urgent action of the European Union (EU) to face the human rights situation in Western Sahara, the Sahrawi representation in Rome told Thursday.
 

The coordinator of the parliamentary group Carmen Mota, who made a presentation on the situation of human rights in Western Sahara at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, explained that "in front of the tragic situation of human rights in Western Sahara, EU move became very necessary."

During this meeting, the delegation expressed "concern" regarding the "deteriorating human rights situation in Western Sahara occupied by Morocco, particularly in the framework of the trial of 24Sahrawi detainees before the military court of Rabat following Gdim Izik camp events."
 

remembering   the minister about "the heavy verdicts " of Moroccan Military court against Gdeim Izik group Ms. Carmen Motta, stressed on "the need for Italia to take initiative at the European level to expand the mandate of the MINURSO to monitor human rights" during the Security Council meeting in April.
 

On the other hand the President of the group called the Italian Government to take a position in order to not include Western Sahara Waters in the fishing agreement between Morocco and the European Union.  (SPS)
