Canberra (Australia) March18,2013(SPS) the Australian Council of Trade Unions(ACTU) called on the Australian Government to intervene to the Moroccan Authorities to insure that the 25 Saharawi political prisoners of Gdeim Izik are given a fair trial in a civilian court.
“The ACTU is of the view that the Saharawis concerned have been denied natural justice and urges the Government to use its influence with the Moroccan Authorities that they are given a fair trial in a civilian court and that their allegation of torture and forced confessions be properly investigated” said the president of ACTU, Ged Kearney in a letter to the Australian Foreign Ministry Bob Carr.
“The Military court went ahead with the trials in crass disregard of the numerous calls by human rights organizations including Amnesty International for an independent and impartial trial in a civilian court and ignored the allegations of torture and confessions allegedly made under duress”
The Australian Organization pointed out that the defence lawyers “have pointed to a number of irregularities including the lack of strong evidence against the accused.(SPS)
