Algerian President receives UN Personal Envoy for Western Sahara

Algiers, April 2, 2013 (SPS) - The President of the Algerian Republic Mr. Abdelaziz Bouteflika received in Algiers on Monday the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara Mr. Christopher Ross, as part of a regional tour.


The mee was held at the Djenane El Mufti’s residence in the presence of Foreign Minister Mourad Medelci and Minister Delegate for Maghreb and African Affairs Abdelkader Messahel.


“The dangerous situation in the Sahel region and its neighborhood makes a solution to Western Sahara more urgent than ever,” Mr. Ross told to the press after his meeting with the President of the Algerian Republic Mr. Abdelaziz Bouteflika.


He said that his visit to Algeria, which is part of a new tour in the region, is devoted to the search of a solution to the question of Western Sahara in accordance with the UN Security Council’s resolutions.


“In this regard, I met with the President Bouteflika and with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Mourad Medelci and Minister Delegate for Maghreb and African Affairs Abdelkader Messahel,” he said.


“I discussed with them the best ways to move forward the course of negotiations between the Polisario Front and Morocco. And I will present the findings of my visit to the Security Council on April 22th,” he added.


The Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara, which is in Algiers since Sunday, had begun on March 20th a tour in the region, which led him to Morocco, the occupied territories of Sahara Western, Saharawi refugee camps and Mauritania. (SPS)
