Saharawi delegation attends annual commemoration of Rwanda genocide anniversary

Addis Ababa, April 8, 2013 (SPS) - A delegation representing the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic attended yesterday, Sunday, the commemoration of the 19th anniversary of the Rwanda Genocide at headquarters of the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia.


The genocide took place on 7th March 1994 and resulted in the loss of thousands of innocent people.


The commemoration took place at Conference Hall at African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia, “Let us commemorate the Rwandan genocide by striving for self-reliance” in the presence of Ms. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, delegation from Rwanda and diplomatic corps accredited to Addis Ababa.


The ceremony was attended by member states, AU organs, national human rights institutions, intergovernmental organizations and civil society organizations.


Speaking on behalf of the African Union, Chairperson of the African Union Commission Ms. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma bitterly conjured up the bloody events, calling for more unity and tolerance among Africans, in addition to renounce violence and rivalry and resolve disagreements by force.


The other petitioners during the ceremony also called for renouncing disagreements, conflicts and ethnic cleansing and start to create an atmosphere of brotherhood, tolerance, solidarity and unity among all Africans.


The Saharawi delegation includes the Minister of Social Affairs and Woman’s Promotion Ms. Mahfuda Mohamed Rahal, SADR Ambassador in Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the AU Mr. Laman Baali.


The event was an opportunity for the Saharawi delegation to hold talks with the Rwandan delegation and members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Addis Ababa.


The talks recalled to the genocide and acts of killing committed against the innocent Saharawi civilians that accompanied Moroccan invasion of Western Sahara. (SPS)
