Activist Ali Salem Tamek visits Denmark to unveil Morocco’s human rights violations

Copenhagen, April 25th, 2013 (SPS) - The Saharawi human rights defender and former prisoner of conscience, Mr. Ali Salem Tamek, has visited Denmark on 23 and 24 April 2013, where he met officials in the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representatives from different organizations and a member of the Danish Parliament, according to POLISARIO representation to Denmark.


Mr. Ali Salem Tamek, Mr. Kurt Mosgaard, Danish General Major and Former MINURSO Chief, and Mr. Abba Malainin, POLISARIO Representative to Denmark, presented lectures about the conflict in Western Sahara in a Conference organized by Aarhus University, in the second biggest city in Denmark, and the Danish United Nations Association (UNA).


The Conference was attended by Danish students, professors and various journalists.
In the Conference, the documentary about the conflict under the title “(La Badil) No other choice than self-determination” was screened.


The Saharawi human rights defender presented other lecture in the headquarters of the Organisation of Afrika Kontakt.


In his presentations, Ali Salem Tamek unveiled Morocco’s systematic human rights violations committed against the Saharawi people in the occupied parts of Western Sahara, adding “there is no freedom of expression, no freedom of assembly, the Saharawi human rights organisations are banned by the Moroccan regime and that Saharawis human rights activist suffer repression, abduction, imprisonments and torture.”


He also talked about the unjust Military Court trial against the 23 Saharawi civilians of Gdeim Izik, speaking about Morocco’s policy of illegal exploitations of the Saharawi natural resources.


Mr. Ali Salem Tamek reaffirmed the urgent need for MINURSO to have a mandate to monitor and report about the situation of human rights in Western Sahara and that the final and lasting solution of the conflict in Western Sahara should only be through a referendum of self-determination. (SPS)
