"Western Sahara Caucus" calls on Obama to be intransigent with Morocco on Sahrawis’ human rights

Submitted on

Washington, Nov 21, 2013 (SPS) - The U.S. Congress Group for Western Sahara "Western Sahara Caucus" sent Tuesday a letter to President Barack Obama asking him to be intransigent with King Mohammed VI on the issue of human rights of the Saharawi people and to place this issue in top priority themes of the talks with Moroccan king.

The letter of the House of Representatives’ "Western Sahara Caucus" comes after the letter sent by members the U.S. Senate in which they recently asked the U.S. President to insist on the issue of Sahrawis’ human rights during his meeting with the Moroccan king scheduled for next Friday at the White House and urged the King to stop obstructing the creation of a mechanism to monitor human rights under MINURSO.

’’We wrote this letter to express our concern about the violations of human rights in Western Sahara, committed by the security forces and secret police of King Mohammed VI against Sahrawis who want to put an end nearly 40 years of occupation of Western Sahara by Morocco,’’ stressed the Caucus group in its letter.

’’When you meet King Mohammed VI during his visit to the United States, we ask you to address, in a direct way, the problem of violations of human rights and to stress the need to monitor these rights in Western Sahara,’’ they said.

In this regard, they stressed that the U.S role as a world leader in the field of human rights "should never be hindered by a government that violates human rights in a blatant way." (SPS)
