Submitted on

STRASBOURG (France), December 13, 2013 (SPS) - The European Parliament (EP) reiterated its support for a fair political solution to the conflict in Western Sahara, on the basis of international law and UN resolutions, to enable the Saharawi people to exercise their right to self-determination.

In its latest annual report on the situation of human rights worldwide approved on Wednesday in Strasbourg, the European Parliament reiterated its call for the immediate release of all Saharawi political prisoners.

The EP also called for unconditional opening of the territory to international observers, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the international media.

The report also highlights "its support for a political solution to the conflict based on international law and UN resolutions, to enable the Saharawi people to exercise their right to self-determination."

The European Parliament recalled its decision adopted unanimously on November 25, 2010 on the situation in Western Sahara and the one adopted on October 22, 2013 on the situation of human rights in the Sahel region and the Western Sahara, highlighting the need for human rights monitoring and protection and respect for the right to create associations, freedom of expression, movement and organization of demonstrations.

The Polisario asked the EU to end its policy of encouraging the occupation and the continued plundering of natural resources of the Saharawi people, and effectively participate in the search of a fair solution of the conflict on the basis of respect of the Saharawi people right. (SPS)
