Security Council requests quick implementation of UN Strategy for Sahel

Submitted on

NEW YORK (United Nations), December 13, 2013 (SPS) - The UN Security Council expressed on Thursday its willingness to find a solution to security, political, humanitarian and development issues in the Sahel region, while requesting a quick and effective implementation of the UN integrated Strategy for Sahel.

During a meeting on peace and security in Africa, the Security Council, while underlining that the situation in the Sahel region was still “alarming,” asked the UN Secretary General to quickly work on the effective implementation of the UN Integrated Strategy for Sahel.

Furthermore, the UN’s body deemed important to mention the national and regional appropriation of the UN Integrated Strategy for Sahel and to ensure the implementation in close consultation with the countries of Sahel, Western Africa and Maghreb, along with regional and multilateral donors and partners.

UN entities which are involved in the implementation of the Strategy are, for their part, asked to coordinate their actions in order to optimize the synergies.

As a reminder, this integrated Strategy, requested by the Security Council in its resolution 2056 (2012), is based on the good governance in all the region, on national and regional security mechanisms capable of facing cross-border threats, including the integration of humanitarian and development plans in order to ensure the long-term resilience.
