AU Peace and Security Council emphesizes need to engage "actively" for decolonization of Western Sahara

 Addis Ababa, February 3, 2014 (SPS ) - The AU Peace and Security Council has stressed the need of the African Union and its institutions to engage actively in the efforts for the decolonization of Western Sahara and enabling its people to exercise their right to self-determination.

 

The Council indicated in its report, approved by the African heads of state and government during the 22 Summit that it decided to put the Saharwi issue among the priorities of its work , calling on the African Union Commission to follow up the situation in Western Sahara and inform the African heads of state and government on the latest developments in order to request the UN Security Council to follow the situation closely .

 

the Council also expressed its satisfaction to the efforts made by the President of the Commission in the framework of the follow-up the decision of the Executive Council , demanding her to continue these efforts  including further consultations with the two parties and to continue to interact with the United Nations and other stakeholders.
