South Africa calls for rapid decolonization of Western Sahara

 Pretoria, February 8, 2014 (SPS) - The Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa, Mr.Marius Fransman, reiterated Thursday his country's support  for the self-determination of the Saharawi people, calling for  the decolonization of Western Sahara.

 

The official said at a conference held at the South Africa Parliament " South Africa remains firm in its support of the inalienable right of the Saharawi people for decolonization and self-determination through a referendum under the auspices of the United Nations which includes the option of independence ."

 

He added that " the illegal occupation of Western Sahara by Morocco is a question of international legitimacy", reaffirming the principles that define his country's position on the issue, including " the central role of the African Union and the United Nations in resolving the conflict." (SPS)
