British parliamentary delegation holds meeting with human rights organization in Western Sahara

 El Aaiun (Occupied Territories), February 15, 2014 (SPS) - A delegation from the British Parliament representing the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Western Sahara (APPG) visiting the occupied territories of Western Sahara held Friday in the occupied city of El Aaiun a meeting with the Committee for the Defense of the Right to Self-determination of the People of Western Sahara.

 

According to Sahrawi human rights source from the occupied territories, the meeting focused on issues related to the right to self-determination, human rights situation and extension of the prerogatives of MINURSO to include human rights monitoring in Western Sahara, as well as the situation of Sahrawi political prisoners in Moroccan prisons and trial of Sahrawis before Moroccan military courts.

 

The British Parliament delegation expressed deep concern about the dire situation of human rights in Western Sahara, especially after hearing testimonies on the suffering of the Sahrawi citizens and continuation of gross violations of human rights by the Moroccan authorities in Western Sahara, the source indicated.

 

The delegation expressed its support for the right to self-determination of the people of Western Sahara, stressing the importance of monitoring and reporting on the violations committed by the Moroccan State against the Saharawi civilians, the same source added.

 

The delegation from the British Parliament including Mr. Jeremy Corbyn, Labour Party MP, Mr Mark Williams, Liberal-Democrat MP, Mr. John Hillary, President of the British NGO War on Want, Mr. John Gurr, coordinator and provides non-profitable services to the Intergroup from outside the Parliament,started Thursday a visit in the occupied city of El Aaiun to examine the situation of human rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.
