Extending Minurso mandate to human rights, a juridical, human urgency (CNASPS)

Submitted on

Algiers, April 8, 2014 (SPS) - The extension of MINURSO (United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara) prerogatives to protect human rights in the Sahrawi territories occupied by Morocco is “juridical and human urgency,” the Algerian National Committee of Solidarity with Sahrawi People (CNASPS) said in a communiqué Monday.

The CNASPS said that extending Minurso’s mandate to human rights will be a “support to an endangered population facing savage repression, torture, arbitrary detention, show trials, forced disappearances and extra juridical sanctions.”

The committee recalled that “daily violations were and still are reported by many local and international organizations as well as many institutions, such as the European Parliament, US State of Department, and UN Special Rapporteur on Torture.”

“The international community cannot remain silent any longer on this unacceptable, well-founded situation,” the CNASPS said.

“The international community must react to protect the Sahrawi population who is peacefully fighting against occupation and for its recognized right to self determination,” continued the committee.

It seized the opportunity to hail the members of the Italian Senate who “have requested their government to take action, in this regard, at the UN Security Council,” and to hail the efforts of the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General Christopher Ross for a just and equitable solution, in line with the international law.”

The CNASPS underlined in its statement that the solution will “make it possible for Sahrawi people to choose their own fate, as stipulated in the recommendations of the Fourth Committee, all the relevant resolutions of the UN General Assembly and Security Council.” (SPS)
