Submitted on

El Aaiun (Occupied Territories), May 19, 2014 (SPS) - The Collective of Sahrawi Human Rights Defenders (CODESA) launched an urgent appeal to human rights organizations around the world to intervene to save the life of the Saharawi political prisoner, Yahya Mohamed El Hafedh Iazza, on unlimited hunger strike for more than four weeks in Ait Melloul prison.

CODESA also called to exert more pressure on the Moroccan government to save the life of the Saharawi political prisoner and preserve his right to life, physical integrity and personal safety.

Mr. Iaazza is in a "critical" health state, he is no longer able to move or speak due to harsh conditions and ill-treatment he is subjected to by the prison authorities, said the source.

CODESA holds the Moroccan State responsible for consequences that may arise from this hunger strike, calling for open dialogue with the Saharawi political prisoner to respond to his legitimate demands as a prisoner of conscience.

Mr. Iaazza is serving since 2008 a sentence of 15 years in prison for participating in a peaceful demonstration demanding the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination and independence, it should be recalled. (SPS)
